I recently bought my first Rolex after years of research. I knew exactly what I wanted. So, on the 22nd of October I headed over to my local rolex AD....
Confident, and ready to buy..... Guess what? I walked out of there the a watch that I had never even considered. Upon my first glance at the watches, one watch caught my eye that I had not even considered prior to seeing it, it was the DJII, with PCL Oyster bracelet, smooth bezel and white stick dial. I tried on the ones I thought I "wanted" but my eyes (and mind) kept going back to the DJII. Believe this, you will know which one is the best one to purchase, you'll just know! Best of luck in your search! |

I would stick to a sub or gmt. Very versatile and even if you don't get it as your first you'll end up getting it due to sheer realization that its a great piece to have.

Don't worry, if you don't get it right the first time, there's always your "next Rolex"

Whichever one you are drawn to. Unless you want a Rolex just cause of the name on the dial. Then just get a datejust on jubilee. Classic Rolex.

If everyone says it, it must be true... especially if you read it on the Internet!

my first was a milgauss, which seems to be NOT a "recommended" first Rolex.... whatever I like it. Haha.
I usually would say to do your research and spend a long time looking, if it's going to be your first and only for the foreseeable future. I know my tastes have changed a lot in the last 3 years. But I see you've been a member here longer than me, so I assume you've looked at your fair share of watches to make a pretty educated decision. |

Good is a vague description.
Good being eye catching to the unknowing will be anything solid gold bling bling. Good being to hold its value is any submariner. Good being comfortable is as good as yours is mine. I have yet to find a bad Rolex. Perhaps we should start hunting?

There's no bad choice in rolex.
I would recommend steel sports. IMHO Sub and Explorer II are the best bang for buck. |

I'd go for a SS sports model such as the Explorer I or no date Sub. You just can't go wrong with either. The designs are understated time-tested elegance that won't cause buyer's remorse or the urge to flip. On the other hand the DJ41 is a smart dressy watch currently only in 2-tone, but will likely be extended to SS models next year (my guess). Cheers!
