Is my crown fully screwed down?
I read a useful thread this week on how tight to screw down the crown, and followed the consensus by screwing mine 'hand tight'. However I can't tell if the gap beneath is due to the crown's design or is there still a gap? Does this look normal to others? (apologies for poor quality of photos)

That doesn't look right to me , but surely your fingers can tell you when's it tight ?
The crown should have no gap at all when screwed tight , it should finish tight against the case . |

Afraid you are very wrong with that statement the stem seal is in the the crown head. And metal to metal contact will not make a seal on anything, if you did have metal to metal contact. Then you have damaged the crown head seal, all the crown needs is screwing down just finger tight no extra force is needed.

It shouldn't fit tight as in "metal to metal", there has to be a slight gap. As long as you're finger tight you're good to go. You'd looks pretty much like my Submariner.

WRONG!! The crown does not mate to the case. There will always be a small space between crown and case because crown tightens to case tube.

Sorry Gary, there should be a gap when the crown is screwed in.
If there were no gap there would be one less seal.

looks good ,, your only snugging it against a rubber o ring , not torquing down a cylinder head.
its a winding crown , not a lug nut. |

Looks perfect to me. I think there's a tendency to screw down the crown too tightly. Finger tight is a bit of a misnomer ... Screw it down until you feel it make contact.

Dont forget that the inside portion of the winding crown has a slight bevel on the outside edge as well...

Hi all, recently i washed my hands while wearing my new gmt. Then, i realised there was a slight gap between the crown & the metal case, it was possibly 1 or 2 turns from not being scewed down fully. Im very concerned about water entering the watch. Should i
1. bring it to the service center for a checkup, where they will open the watch 2. Or monitor for a few more days for signs of water If i go for 2, what are the signs that water has entered, besides the glass fogging up? Any other suggsetions on what i should do / look out for. Thanks. |
