Best steals ever?

So, I work in a retail store that buys/sells watches.

Had a customer the other day sell me a BRAND new Tudor Pelagos (blue dial and bezel) with extra straps and all, boxed and perfect. For $1200

Couple of days ago, picked up a black dial domed bezel with roulette date 116200 datejust brand new with stickers and all extras for..... $2500.

What are some of your guys steals? :)

Best deal I ever will get was on my first Rolex, a BNIB 16610. Bought it through a friend of mine whose dad was an AD back east. She got me the "daddy's little girl" discount...AD cost and no sales tax. While I didn't shop the price around, I doubt the grey market could have done better.

Did he sell it to you or your store?

Are you personally buying these or are you working at a store and underpaying people a fair value on their watches based on their naivety?

Bingo. I don't harbor any resentment towards them. It's business.

I would not be so quick to pick on the pawnshops. Not all shops buy from thieves and/or addicts.

Our last purchase was from a Doctor who could not be bothered to go elsewhere, trusted us and returned with more.

People use pawn shops for various reasons. It is not always a last resort. In fact I know of jewelry stores (more than one) that sell to pawnshops...

Go over to the Rolex for Sale forum find some of those guys that have website that buy and sell watches. Send them a few pics and you will see that some will offer much less than pawn shops. I know I have tried. Down right rude some of the initial offers. If you provide them with a ballpark price that you want, they simply pass.

Low balling the hell out of someone doesn't seem like something to brag about. I guess the thread title was pretty apt.

I am not holding a gun to anybody's head and forcing them to sell. There is a buying value and a selling value. When it is a C2B transaction, the selling value is less as we are not the end user.

I will post pictures soon.

Everytime somebody comes in to sell a watch, we give them our best offer. We are located in a high street with various other watch shops that buy and sell used/new watches and jewellery. Also, to prove the goods are not stolen, anyone who wishes to sell any watches/jewellery has to get a police clearance letter from the police to assure that if any watches do end up being stolen, they can be tracked.

As I said, nobody held a gun to the seller's head. They are free to check the market and other shops, come back and sell to the highest bidder.

When the economy tanked, I picked up a Z serial 16622 for $4500. It was complete with all boxes, booklets, card, hang tags, etc.

I bought my Z serial unpolished full box, papers, everything, GMT Master II 16710 in November, 2015.

I paid $6200 CAD. This is equal to $4600 USD. It was in absolutely perfect condition and had everything. The owner just didn't know how much they had risen in value recently.

Yep. Still unpolished and complete down to the bezel protector. It's easily in 95%+ condition too, with a nice bit of fade on the pepsi bezel.

Surprised you didn't get even more out of it. But nice payday regardless.

Interested to know how you verified that you were getting a genuine watch through craigslist?

At MVP.......I'll be honest, it was an educated guess, and a gut feeling....and I've learned to trust my gut.

In a nutshell, and some of the more conservative crowd will disagree....the guy had me into his home, I met his wife, his kids, I live in the same neighborhood, his story was very plausible....and I got a good feeling.....so I trusted it, and it paid off!

And yes, it could have went sideways, but it didn't, and I was willing to accept that risk. I am by no means an expert, but I was educated about what he was selling.
