Platinum Day Date Owners
Hi a few questions to any members who own/owned the Platinum Day Date, in any size configuration. If you wore as a daily, how did you find the platinum held up. Would it be comparable to gold? I assume without the fluted bezel the watch would remain generally under the radar? Which part of the watch did you feel showed scratches the most. Thank you for any input you may have on owning this wonderful watch.
Cheers!

Without a doubt, the polished bezel shows the most wear. However it's no more or less than my steel watches. Pt is softer than steel or gold but you don't lose metal with polishing. I wear mine daily in rotation with a number of gold watches. All of them have been perfectly fine.

I have owned several Platinum DD's over the years and have not found them too prone to wear. I only wear mine in a rotation with several others. The bigger issue for me is the lack of adjustability in the president bracelet.

I always thought platinum was harder than gold, hence it was more difficult for jewelers to work with.

It's denser, which wear tools out faster. And it's gummy, which fouls tools and requires specialized techniques. For both these reasons, it's more difficult to work with.

Never had a problem with excessive wear. Traded mine because of the weight. It's really heavy.

Why doesn't the plat DD come with a fluted bezel?

What I've heard is that PT is too difficult to "machine" to create a fluted bezel. Not sure if this is true or not but I think over time the non-fluted bezel has become one of the hallmarks, so to speak, of the PT DD and allows the knowledgable WIS to distinguish a PT DD from a WG DD from afar.
Interested to hear what folks more expert than me have to add....... |

I believe it's what blue said. The white gold DD does not come with a smooth bezel and the platinum DD does not come in fluted, therefore making it quite easy to determine which metal a silver colored Day-Date is just by looking at it. I could be wrong, but based on the 1000's of watches I've looked at online and in store I'm pretty sure I'm correct.

Fluted bezel never came factory on the Pt. as far as I know, nor was a Pt. Oyster bracelet available for the DD. The glacier dials were only factory fitted to the Pt. models, never the WG but some have swapped the dials to the WD DD model.

It's to differentiate the Pt model from the WG model. While the blue dial is easily identifiable to most as a Pt model there are other dial options that make it difficult to differentiate such as the black dials. So the smooth bezel usually helps. As for the argument that it's difficult to flute a platinum bezel, just turn over the watch and look at the caseback which has the micro fluting necessary for the caseback tool to grab it.

As you can see, Rolex cut the back from the diamond to fit into everything. Otherwise the diamond is too long. Rolex did not use brilliants for this dial. |

Same dial as I have, as you can see, the bottom of the diamond is cut off. Otherwise the dial won't fit on the movement. The diamonds are XL, larger than we used to see on Rolex dials. That's why this dial is called XL pavé. http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=387926 reference for DD 13/18038-S259 same but for YG |

Keep in mind gold is worth 20% more than platinum: http://www.kitco.com/market/
Go with white gold. |
