Jim: it's too expensive to hit the heat switch....it's not cold enough here yet to really need heat on a regular basis, but it's just around the corner, and right now its around $3.82 per gallon, down a bit from a few months ago, but very expensive, and as the fall and winter arrive, it'll get damn cold and even more so....you won't be alone in shivering this year, believe me. I'm worried about many people not being able to afford heating their homes adequately. So MOVE OVER......BRRRR!!
best, dan |

No central heating for us yet this year. It's still quite balmy here and I think last year's renovations are going to make it warmer inside this winter.

No. Too early. I tell the wife to dress warmer and use more blankets. People wonder why when they come over she has a winter coat on.

Yes. When it starts to get cold I have the neighbor, a women, come over and keep me warm in the basement at night. She brings new meaning to central air.

Just turned it on for the first time last night. The house got down to 65 so my wife told me "if I know what's good for me...."
Suffice it to say, I knew what was good for me |

Last week my wife was complaining that I needed to turn on the furnace. I refused. It warmed back up again this week, but the days are limited. Probably in the next couple weeks, I'll be bleeding the radiators and firing the boiler. In the middle of the winter, our power bill was around $400/month USD, and that's with the thermostat set at 64 when we're around, and 56 at night and when we're gone! This 94 year-old house is not very well insulated!

I own a heating and air company and firmly believe this winter will be crazy to say the least. I'm in south Georgia so it doesn't get very cold, but just about everyone is going to wait until the last possible minute to turn it on and it's going to be insanely busy.
See, usually old people turn their heater on at the first sign of any coolness in the air. Then you have the people who are kinda in between and aren't going to turn it on when it's just a little chilly, but they aren't going to wait either once they're uncomfortable. Then you have the die hards who wait til the very last second when it's just about unbearable. It was always a gradual progression. I personally believe a lot more people will be in the last category than before due to fuel prices, and this is going to create a SERIOUS backlog in our industry. Imagine how busy a plumber would be if everyone fired up their water heater at the same time in a year. Do yourself a favor and at least fire it up to see if it's working so you're not in the same boat as everyone begging us to come out before we take care of the other people on the list in front of you due to your (A) newborn child (B) old people in the house with you or (C) child with asthma in the home. We've heard it all before.

We've had our first week with temps below 100F.
But the weatherman just said that they're headed back up over 100 next week...
