You have seen evidence of the market softening? I haven't paid enough attention to the market to have an opinion, I thought the consensus was the market was still climbing though. As if anyone can really know though....I get it.

The modern pre-owned watch market is tanking.

Rolex and some Patek references are the only things some dealers are buying for HARD CASH.

Other brands are taken on consignment only or given the HARD PASS.

Inventory is sitting unsold for longer...

I think it is inevitable that this carries over into vintage. In the past quality Sport Rolex vintage would be sold the day it was posted by dealers, but now...it's sitting longer. The vibes just aren't as good these days...

Just my opinion...I'm sure others still see a sky full of rainbows and will defend that vision...

Tom's links are to the same guy at HQ Milton I'm bought the watch from - so I would assume the price is reflecting the condition

Absolutely! My post was not a criticism of the seller or the price the buyer paid at all... just posting a couple of examples for perspective and to spur discussion.

It's definitely a lot of money. Non-original/non-period correct bracelet, slightly damaged dial, corrosion on hands, beat-up insert. I guess this is where we're at with these examples now.

It's a fair price from a reliable dealer if you want to pay extra for the things that make it a rare watch.

Sounds like a buyer's remorse to me. Should have done your research and ask questions prior to purchase. Sure, you can return it but why waste the seller's time?

Gilt Dial. Underline Dial. Unpolished. Serviced. Is it too much money? Not necessarily. IMHO these are going to start to climb steadily as the vintage Rolex market shows it has been holding fairly decently over the past few years and GMT's are finally riding the wave.

The bracelet - eh? Not sure that would bother me but I would seek out a period correct bracelet for it which should not be too costly and you can sell the current bracelet to offset the cost.

Enjoy it regardless! I'm sure it will look awesome on the wrist. The Hi Def photos don't do it justice.

If we are going to be honest I would personally spend 29k buying a perfect later glossy gilt rather than one with a less perfect, less glossy dial. Rarity is one thing but I think the market values quality higher than rarity on models such as 1675. That said; if you like it you still have a gorgeous GMT to keep. A perfect example is however easier to turn if you ever want to sell it.

I have always shared this opinion.
I would rather pay top dollar for a basic reference/model, as opposed to paying a lot of money for a very rare reference (in average condition).
Not only do I enjoy quality more, but I find that quality will sell at the end of the day. Many people share the same mind set that a "quality" watch deserves that slight premium, making it easier to sell as well should the day come.

If your watch was in top condition, it would be priced a lot higher. If I could afford to, I would much rather justify paying higher for better, than lower for "average".
This is just me though. The beauty in vintage is that everyone has his own taste with these things.

Value of an object is measured by what people are willing to pay for it. Since you just paid 29k I guess it's worth 29k. To you.

To me, an impulse buy means it is something frivolous that you know you are probably going to pay top dollar for. You got a watch from a great seller, as advertised, and now seem to be regretting your impulsive decision.

No, they are not synonymous. You can have buyers remorse after purchasing a house - and that is rarely, if ever, an impulse buy.

it is very difficult to find a non chapter swiss gilt in really great condition. the dials tend to
deteriorate. this one looks better than many but not pristine. If you like it and wear it, enjoy it. Jacek & Scott take care of their customers because most buy more from them.

To answer your original question, I do not think you overpaid. As has been stated several times already in this thread, Jacek is a respected seller and has a great reputation. I have no doubt he knows what the market value of this particular watch is and set the sales price accordingly. So no, I don't think you overpaid. You paid market-value for the watch.

Now, whether you, personally, are happy with your purchase, only you can decide. But you didn't get gouged.
