7 US Navy sailors missing after collision
Terrible accident, I just can't for the life of me fathom how this could have happened.

Not that hard to fathom considering the area of operations. Looked like the destroyer was hit midship but that could have been the result of last minute evasive maneuvering by the destroyer. You wouldn't believe how many sailors go man overboard each year.

First and foremost, hoping that all of the 7 missing sailors have survived this ordeal. Time is running short. Secondly, a Naval Board of Inquiry will eventually establish who was responsible for this tragedy. If the commander of the destroyer was at fault, chances are he will never command another US naval vessel and his career (along with any opportunity for advancement) is pretty much over. If on the other hand, the merchant ship was responsible for the collision then the captain of that freighter should be reprimanded/dismissed and/or relegated to permanent galley duties as a steward.

I saw that this morning.
That's rather embarrassing for the destroyer crew. They're a war ship, they should be aware of everything in the area, yet a cargo ship got them by surprise? Heads need to roll. |

Terrible tragedy,
In a collision at sea there is never one to blame. Two parties involved. Two are to blame. International Collision Regulations 2a (simplified) state that you always have to follow the rules. Rule 2b states that you have to deviate from them to avoid a collision, hence never one alone is to blame but question of guilt is dived in a percentage. Both officers on watch are accountable. Captains always get the blame but in many occasions they were not even there or called upon much to late.

I was thinking the same thing. I served on an LHD as Air Traffic Control. We had plenty of radar in our space alone, not to mention the rest of the crew that use similar equipment. I just don't see how this is possible. Hope they find the missing.

I just can't fathom a collision with a fully functioning Aegis destroyer and a cargo ship. Some malfunction or serious breakdown in chain of command must have occurred.
Hoping the 7 sailors are found to be safe! I see the captain was evacuated for medical injuries as well, sincerely he hope he has a full recovery. |

I just heard all 7 were found dead in a flooded engine compartment on the destroyer. RIP to all. Very sad and someone has a lot explaining to do.
