Wsop update and numbers:

10,000 buy in main event started 8 July with 7221 players

Plays down to 9 players Monday 17 July and then 2 days off final 9 players come back Thursday 20 July and then play down to 6, next day play down to 3 and Saturday the final 3 play until the end which could last 10 minutes or 12 hours

They start playing at 5pm west coast time staring Thursday and same on Friday and Saturday. They have 90 minute dinner break some where in there I think, depends on how fast things happen... maybe since it's a 5pm start the last few days no long breaks, just short 15 minute breaks very few hours

Today stated with 85 players at 11am and now it's 9:30pm now and 35 players are left and should stop at 2-2:30am so 14 hour poker days.

They used to play down to 9 and then take few months off and all 9 would come back in November for 3 days. . That was not good and ESPN with their infinite wisdom changed it back to normal. Who wants to wait 4 months get payment ? If someone is on a hot streak they just stop ? Kinda like basketball, very streaky at times.

Winner get 8.1 million
2nd gets 4.7
3rd gets 3.5
4....... 2.6
5........ 2 million
6.........1.6
7.....,,,1.4
8.........1.2
9.........1 million

So the difference between 1st and 2nd is huge

1084 players will make some money out of the 7221 that started

There's some very nice motor coaches in the back were some players have brought and go take naps, private chefs, sleep over night fully powered by huge generators they brought in. These are something very nice just like homes.

No girls are playing, just men are left.

WSOP.com to read up

Cool update!

I been a poker player for about 18 years and never have gone to the WSOP. Here in San Diego there are a bunch of qualifiers that can get you a seat.

Glad to hear they dumped the nov. 9 crap. I've played other events at the WSOP but not the main.

Exactly, it was ESPN thinking. No wonder they are not the premier sports channel anymore with type of thinking.

The WSOP had a special room this year inside the main room set up by "Kings Casino" very high limit cash only games. I think they are from Czech Republuc and really set it up nice.

4 decent pros left. No star power.

Poker died when the doj shut down online poker through a loophole.

I'd rather watch cash games anyway more at steak each hand.

The November 9 made perfect sense. Before this year, there was no live coverage starting at Day 1. In the past, ESPN would film and then put out 1-2 hour episodes leading up to November to give people a chance to catch up on all the action over the days leading up.

This also allowed players to go on talk shows, hire coaches, watch footage of their opponents and prepare making for a much higher level of play for poker's biggest stage. For example, if I made the November 9 and I was in seat 5 with with 45,000,000 chips I would hire 8 other top pros and have each 8 study and represent one of my opponents. Then you can have them each sit at their assigned seat with their actual chip counts and practice playing against them to prepare.

The fact that everyone left knows everyone will be studying their play adds another level of thought for how to play which results in a very high level of play to watch.

There are plenty of other advantages as well. It's nice seeing the room filled with friends and family who have traveled from other countries that are their supporting their player with matching shirts, outfits, whatever. This is really only possible if you take the break.

As for waiting to get paid, that's not true. Everyone who makes the November 9 in the past would get paid 9th place money right away which most often is $1 million. That should last most people a few months.

Anyway, I'm really glad to see the live coverage from Day 1 now. I have watched every minute of ESPN broadcast for the last 14 years. Unfortunately, they skipped a few days due to Wimbledon and some other coverage which were pretty key such as they money bubble. Hopefully, they keep improving on it though. For all the casual fans who hasn't read all the books or practiced with software or training videos online, Antonio Esfandiari does an incredible job breaking it down in the booth to give you some idea of what's going on in our minds when we make every single decision and the reason why.
