What's all the hype regarding Pepsi, Coke, and Root Beer bezels?
Ok so what the cute tiny kittens?!?!?!
I own the the latest hottest greatest most desired Rolex on earth. The new and improved 116710 GMT Master IIc. Hands down, this IS the watch of ALL watches. Now I suspect that I'm about to take beating from all those WIS' out there who may believe otherwise. IMAO (in my arrogant opinion), the new ceramic bezel is a perfect masterpiece. So why do people still praise the ugly duckling bezels which are aka those ulcer causing soda beverages that decay your teeth ??????? Last edited by Tools; 20 October 2008 at 10:14 AM.. Don't really hear much 'hype' about the bezels...but the color schemes and ability to swap are very nice on the older GMT II.

A quick way to determine day or night I suppose (although someone may correct me on this one).

Based on astcell's (Robert) thread the other day, Rolex is trying to make the Pepsi and Coke ceramic bezels for the GMT. They should be huge hits when they finally debut. Here's the link to Robert's thread.
Rolex VIP night in Tampa: Results! Frostie found some really good pictures on the internet of what the new bezels might look like on the steel GMT C. Coloured Ceramic bezel different variations NEW PICS

When the GMT was first introduced it was designed by a pilot for pilots..
The black over red look is similar to the pilots artificial horizon instrument which was possibly the most important instrument in the cockpit in the 50's.. so it could be argued that the design is nothing more than aesthetics.. In actual use, originally, the GMT did not have the convenient "jump" Mercedes hand so it became convenient to be able to see and set the bezel in relationship to light or dark outside.

When you're flying at 35,000 feet, the horizon (and when the sun sets and rises) is dramatically different than it is when driving around in your car...

And let us not forget that the GMT was popular with submariners, military pilots and so on who might either spend days / weeks / months locked somewhere windowless OR wake up in a dark room after some well earned sleep and want to know.....

You are using it to keep track of the second timezone, the one you are not in, or to track Greenwich Mean Time.
What you see out your window does not help you determine day or night half a world away (not easily anyway). |

The so called improvements are only improvements to some, I much prefer the classic GMT II to the new ceramic. If someone gave me a new ceramic model I would sell it and but the classic if I didn't already have one. You see, you have you opinion and I have mine, I don't like the larger in you face numbers one the ceramic and polished center links are definitely not for me. I don't want a shinny bracelet or a shinny bezel, so the GMT II has gone from a killer watch to one that I will never spend my hard earned money on. At least you are happy with yours, isn't that all that counts. Sounds like you are a little defensive over the issue, maybe you need to go get yourself a classic GMT pepsi or coke and find out for yourself what the "hype" is all about.

Odd ball is in babe. I myself will start buying up different bezels for my GMT to change its look from time to time. Maybe even a Jubilee bracelet. |

Well if the colors changed at 24h and at 12h then yes I can understand how that might indicate AM and PM. But from what I have seen, the colors change at 6h and 18h.
Once again.......what the #*ck????????? |

I don't like what Rolex is doing to the new line of "old standards" they are turning them into fashion watches rather than watch/tools. I don't like bling! This is one of the reasons I purchased the last generation GMT II.

I have personally observed the sunset as early as 4:30pm and as late as 10:00pm. I still do not understand the purpose of the bi colored bezel and how it interfaces with the 24 hour clock. |

It rises at 6:00hr and sets at 18:00hr every day on the equator. What I use the two coloured bezel for is I can see 15 minute segments very quickly when using the bezel to time things.

Have a few GMTs and no matter what color bezel insert, I use the watch to tell time. If I need a bezel insert to tell when it is dark outside; I will buy a piano and sing like Stevie Wonder.

Just as your example is one experience, here in Anchorage it's even more different. On the winter solstice, sunrise is almost 10:30 and sunset a little after 15:00. In the summer, just the opposite, when it never gets dark. The further north, it's even more extreme. The black bezel is just "different". It doesn't provide the graphical representation of day/night, only the numbers. That's just fine, too; whatever your personal preference. It never hurts to verify by just looking out the window... |
