Personally, I would go with the Z model since it was the first year produced and is the "the original 'stick dial' 3186 movement" GMT II. Again, I don't think it really matters because most collectors of the vintage Rolex aren't too hung-up with serial numbers and years of production, but concentrate more on the model type they collect within a specific time period. I'm sure if we're around in 30 years we'll know the answer. Hope this helped confuse you!!!!!!!!!!!!! John

When modern 16710 GMT II's ever make it into the "collector" arena, it is unlikely that the 3186 movement will have much impact at all.... It might hinge on if the 3186 is short lived movement, and that is unlikely, it will probably power GMT's for a decade or so... I think that tritium dials and lug-holes cases will have more of an impact.
If you look historically at Rolex collectibles, the dial and hands seem to be the major factor, followed by whatever little "other worldly" attachment, such as the "Newman" dials on an old Daytona, or the "Orange Hand EXP II', or for whatever reason....the early Milgauss that nobody wanted at the time.. It is very seldom that a change in the movement comes into play.. Such as the Sub, going from the 15xx, to the 3000 then to the 3130... It is a very minor point and only goes to originality. On anomaly is the current rage for the Zenith powered Daytona.... But that is a recent interest and I don't think that it will be a big player in a decade or so..
