GMT IIc scratch on cyclops

Hi all. My 4 month old GMT IIc seems to have a hairline scratch on the date cyclops. I don't know how it happened and it's not noticeable from a distance but if I look at it, it's definitely there and annoys me! (I couldn't get a good picture.) I assume this isn't a warranty item, right?

Yep you'll have to pay to have the crystal replaced. I scratched my SubC cyclops and it was around £225GBP to have a new crystal fitted at an RSC.

That's correct, I remember recently reading about another member who had the same thing happen...which is really unfortunate, it would drive me crazy too.

Like this. My first Rolex. Not very noticeable, but it is seriously bugging me. I still have not determined that it is not some kind of smudge, but I doubt it. Did I see something here about an AR coating on the cyclops? It looks like maybe a scratch on the coating if so.

Paid $315ish for a new crystal on a 114300 earlier this year, hopefully it's not too bad

If it's just on the cyclops, couldn't RSC replace just the cyclops and not the entire crystal?

Possible its just glued on but knowing Rolex they would insist on a new crystal..

had the same issue with mine. rsc replaced it for around $300 while getting a service. bugged me too!!

$300 seems cheaper than I'd expect for Rolex to do anything, that's good to know. I've done things to my crystal that I would have bet scratched the heck out of it but so far I've been lucky.

Same thing happened to my GMT, walked too close to a stucco wall :(. Luckily mine is almost impossible to see if you don't know to look for it. No warranty coverage on external damage.

Remove the cyclops until you feel like replacing the entire crystal.

It's definitely not a warranty item.

These things sneak up on you. Like a stone chip on your car windscreen you notice weeks after it happened.

Do you replace the entire windscreen because of a little chip? Heck no...

And once you get passed that after a few days, suddenly, you don't even notice it.

Rolex won't just replace the cyclops, it's the whole crystal or nothing.

This was the damage on mine, doesn't look much but once seen it can't be unseen :-)

This happened to an old sub of mine - I smashed it into a stainless steel thing at work and it had a similar mark on the cyclops. I used tooth paste and a dremel and it went away. Turns out it's very rare to get a scratch on sapphire unless from a diamond. Much more common is that some of the material you hit got transferred to the sapphire and should come off w diamond paste or something else. Good luck

AR coating is under the cyclops unfortunately.

Take a Dremel with a small cotton buffing pad or disc and use some Simichrome metal polish to it and I think you'll pleasantly surprised.

May try that. I am a do-it-yourself kind of guy. Now to get the nerve to put something abrasive on this new investment. Reminds me of peeling door trims of a new car. That is a bit of commitment.

I am also still wondering at what scratched it since I have never scratched a sapphire crystal. This happened prior to my ownership, though I will contribute my own ( to the steel anyway).

Or, leave it alone until service. I mean, heck in only shows up in hi res pics to the forum

Yes it is sapphire and they can be removed with some heat applied to the cyclops the glue to stick a new cyclops is a special UV glue. Clean and degrease the crystal first thats important,a very small drop of the UV glue on date window.Then set cyclops over date window once you are happy its straight, place under UV light or strong direct sunlight.Once glue has set you can remove any excess glue with simple acetone [which is nail varnish remover].
