114060 vs 216570

Just want to get some thoughts and opinions from the kind folks here on TRF. I have been looking for a used 114060 for some months now, but have not come across any decently priced ones. I have asked my regular grey dealers to keep an eye out, with a budget that I am comfortable with. But zilch so far. Quite bored of the hunt, I am now considering just pulling the trigger on a 216570 (black dial) instead. Used prices for the Exp2 are lower than a used 114060 and if I'm honest, I quite like both.

Before you ask me to go for trusted sellers here on TRF, I am located in Malaysia. Which means once you factor in exchange rates, shipping, taxes, etc... this is no longer feasible.

Some idea of what I currently have: 116610LV, 116710BLNR, 116660LN, 116713LN. BLNR is in the safe; while I like it, its purpose is really for me to watch its value grow. Which leaves me with the Hulk and DSSD - both of which I don't really want to wear to work; one won't fit under a cuff and the other is a little too eye-catching. As for the two-tone... well.

I've also at some point owned a 116710LN, 116610LN. Modern sports Rolex suits me, especially since I prefer bigger case sizes. What I'm really after is a simple, understated watch, something I can wear to work and won't risk getting (unwanted) attention from my bosses... but a Rolex. Maybe to be strapped on, on Fridays after a week of Seikos and Apple Watch. Hence why I was gravitating towards the 114060 in the first place; just wind and adjust the time and you'd be good to go. But... should i consider the 216570 instead, since I just can't seem to find a reasonably priced 114060?

Tough choice. But as you have a couple of divers perhaps the ExpII would add some variety to your collection and at the same time provide the under the radar watch you are going for. Have you considered an Explorer instead of the II?

I did, but even at a larger 39mm, just does not go well on my wrist. I just don't like how it looks on me, unfortunately.

The Explorer II has (previously the 40mm) always been my go to "under the radar" Rolex. Meetings, holidays, dodgy areas, etc. Beautiful, but not flashy. Ceramic bezels can catch the eye with it's shiny splendour.

I would say " no date no deal" so the EXII
But.... I generally like the Sub design more.

Those were the exact two watches I was deciding on (my first Rolex). After months being dead set on the 114060, I went to the AD to try it on one more time and flippantly asked to try on a 216570 Black. I knew right there the EX2 was for me and it hasn’t left my wrist since I got it (brand new from DavidSW).

I wanted to be under the radar and only one person has even noticed it and it’s only because he is saving for an EX2 and knew what he was looking at. I love it!

I’ve owned both references...twice. I love Submariners in any flavor and the 114060 falls into that category. Having said that I prefer the black dial 216570. It’s more comfortable and isn’t another black dial divers watch. It’s different than the rest and it has a cool vintage look. Flies under the radar too. I currently still have it and it’s lasted longer than any other Rolex I’ve owned in the last 2-1/2 years. Plus you have the divers covered. YMMV

but, 114060 is the best modern diver that rolex has manufactured till date, something is more special about it..

ExpII as providing more with date and GMT capabilities. Although a larger Rolex it isn't disproportionate like the Sub. It gets my vote.

I just like the 114060 look better. The ExpII is certainly more "functional" and though sometimes I curse under my breath that I don't have the date in my head, all it takes is one look at that perfectly unclouded black dial and ceramic bezel and wow. I am glad I chose the 114060.

The sub is always going to pound the EXP2 on a TRF poll...but, I think the EXP2 would fit into your collection better.

Go for the 114060, the lack of cyclops puts this way under the radar. Perfect watch for work or play.

I've owned both. The Exp II was just too big for my taste. The Sub is the only Rolex I regret flipping, but I did so because at the time I had 4 subs. Ended up keeping my YG SubC and my Kermit.

I read all of the comments you have shared (yes, even the sneaky SD43, heheh), and have still not decided... I think I need to try on both; even if individually. I too love the Subs silhouette, but would having both 116610 and 114060 clash a little bit? Idk, I cannot seem to make up my mind.

Poll votes shows preference for the Sub, but I also see more pics of the Exp2 in here. And I must say, they do look good too...

Clearly the EX II given what you have and why you’re buying it. Why add another watch that has essentially the same shape as all but one of your watches and looks quite similar to that last one too.

I chose the sub. Given your collection though, if you had said the Polar ExpII I would have chosen that. For me though I prefer the Sub to the black dial!

Thanks for the input again, gents. I managed to try both on at a grey dealer store and found that I gravitated much more towards the Sub. Contacted my regular guy, made a quickfire decision, then pulled the trigger...
