These are the people who ruin otherwise customer-friendly policies for everyone. Just like the people who wear shoes for a year and then return to Nordstrom, use a snowblower for the winter or a lawnmower for the summer and return to Sears, etc.

Prob not even the most pathetic customer at that specific Costco that day... I'm sure there was some sort scene caused at one of their food sample stations.

In all seriousness, this is so pathetic and terrible, if I was a higher-up at Costco, I'd find out who she was and revoke her membership.

People like that you don't even want to be friends with or even want to know. Imagine what they would do behind your back. People like that will cheat you any chance they get.

I've seen this quite often at places like Costco with generous return polices. Sad that people abuse these policies and spoil it for everyone.

I've seen someone at Costco return a pack of steaks. Only problem was there was only a tiny piece left of what must have been a 10 pound pack. They said it tasted off and all their guests threw it out, but mysteriously they had that tiny piece remaining... the guy at the returns counter rolled over and refunded. I've also seen someone use this exact same excuse to return 1/30th of a giant kids' birthday cake. I wonder how people like this sleep at night or look themselves in the mirror.

Stories like that make me sad for humanity. The only consolation is that they will get theirs in the end.

Meanwhile I was rejected when I tried to return a fan to Costco. It was two months old and died. They wouldn't let me return it because it was missing the little remote that came with it. I'm sure that lady's tree didn't have all the needles that originally came on it

someone always pushes this a bit too far. I was happy when they took back my printer that broke in 24 months.

The big WTF thing in retail theft when I was on the job was people would go into a huge chain high end retail store that I won’t name and just shoplift a stack of expensive jeans. Those like $ 2-300 jeans.

Then come right back or have a friend come right back and go to the exchange counter and demand a refund. Everyone suspected they were stolen but it couldn’t be proven so the employees would have to just count out a large stack of cash to them.

No bag. No receipt. Their policy was so lax. The loss prevention guys told me that the store was terrified of being accused of disparate treatment even by theifs. Mind boggling.

I believe they have since changed their policy.

That is nutty. I can't believe said store that shall not be named would take returns without a receipt AND give a cash refund.

Amazing?!?
There’s obvious value in being customer-friendly, but there is a line and it’s crossed here.
Unreal.

One more thing: I had no idea Costco sold live trees. Why would you buy one there? Fake tree? Fine. Live one? Go to a farm and get a fresh one.

Probably swept up the ashes from her Duraflame log and returned that as well.

I heard a story about a person bringing a 10 year old soiled mattress with broken springs to Sam's Club.
The employee did not want to accept it but I believe the customer called the headquarters, and they told the employee to accept it.

I personally saw a person buy kitchen cabinet hinges, then return the ones he replaced for a refund.

What's crazy is the effort she was willing to put in to transport a big tree to the store to get what I assume was a $100 refund.

These cases are the reason why a lot of customer-facing people are so cynical.
Over 40 years of work I so often saw junior employees adhere to the policy they had been given only to have management wimp-out when it came to a confrontation.
The customer would walk out of the manager's office having got everything they wanted, and sneer at the customer service person who had in good faith, delivered the company's stated policy.
