Vintage Overhaul/Service question - ref 1016
Hi all - first ever post here. I have a 1962 ref 1016 that has recently stopped working. I brought it in to the local authrised Rolex repair centre here. They want to do a complete overhaul (take eveything apart, reoil, replace gaskets), replace the mainspring, which they say is broken, and replace the dial and hands. I have already told them no way are they touching the dials or hands, but is there something else I should be worried about that might detract from the value or vintageness of the watch? Are new gaskets and a new main spring a problem? This is the frist time I have had it looked at in the five years I had it. Bought it from a reputable dealer in NYC. Thanks for the help!

Gasket/mainspring isn't a problem if replaced with correct parts.
I wouldn't let them touch it after their initial comments. |

Any parts in the movement/any gaskets etc... is okay but leave the hands, dial alone and no polishing of the case or bracelet. Especially the 1016 is becoming very popular with collectors, you want to live it alone. There are a few horologist who specialized in vintage watches / vintage Rolex that can repair your watch with genuine Rolex parts. If you do a Forum search you will find their info.

You're located in Hong Kong? Don't you dare take your Ref. 1016 to an RSC, take it instead to Michael Young at Classic Watch Repair. Level 11 Room A, 2 Carnarvon Road, Tsim Sha Tsui Hong Kong Tel +8522151 1777 __________ Instagram: @onthedial |

Thanks everyone for the tips.
I'm no longer in HK (need to update my profile), I'm now in Prague, CZ. I'm spooked enough by the RSC wanting to replace the dials and hands that I will look for another option. |
