Need help asap should I do this trade for a Daytona ceramic new black face

A local Ad is willing to buy my used AP diver model 15703st.00.a002ca01. I the watch purchased new from an AP ad in 11/30/11 its in flawless conditionall books papers registered with AP.

I am trying to get $9500 and in return can trade toward a new black Daytona ceramic at retail plus tax they are an authorized Rolex ad. What should I do?

You're getting hosed in that trade. Your AP is worth closer to if not more than the Daytona.

Don't screw yourself just because the Daytona is hard to get. Buy the Daytona outright and sell your AP separately.

If you want the Daytona - do it.

They are VERY different watches - and honestly I always preferred my Diver over the Daytona - especially during the summer.

That trade-in value sounds about right for an AD, and they’ll turn around and sell it for 2-3k more. They ALWAYS go low on trade in amounts.

Personally. I’d keep the diver and just buy the Daytona.

Just my .02

I have seen a few used non open back AP divers trade in the 12k-12.5k range. One AD by phone offered me 10k for my piece if its in flawless condition since I originally bought it from them.

My correct collection is a Patek 5167A I just got from this AD less than a month ago, Rolex deep sea, Rolex submariner ceramic, AP ROC 39 mm, Rolex datejust, Omega planet ocean, and this AP diver. Out of all my watches the AP diver never really sang to me like my other pieces and sits in my safety deposit box the most. I don't know if they will sell me the daytona outright without the trade.

Thats because they will sell it for 12-13K and make the premium on the Daytona that way.

If you are ok with that, then go for it!

Ask. If they won't get you the watch any other way then you'll have to decide if you're willing to pay roughly $3800 out-of-pocket. That puts the Daytona at about $17k.

Seems like a good deal to get the Daytona at sticker. If you don’t like the AP, it’s a seamless, hassle free trade. I would do it.

if you are worried about private selling your AP; as I am sure you already know you will get more doing that, you might take a try at contacting DavidSW for your AP and then just buy the Daytona outright. DavidSW is quite fair with his offers. That way you get your money out of the AP fast and you get your Daytona

Excellent advice. Davidsw is very fair with pricing.

Rolex85 thats my biggest worry I have never sold a watch privately before and want to make the right decision. I am not a flipper at all just have the opportunity to get a daytona which I have never owned. I messaged another forum member this is how I look at maybe I am not seeing it the correct way since I have never sold a watch privately or in general.

I could potentially sell my AP diver privately for $12-12.5k and would lose about $3k out of pocket if this AD buys mine for $9500. But I would come out ahead and make it up because the value of a black ceramic daytona is going for $18k plus currently and dont see that dropping significantly plus rolex could do a price increase at anytime.

I'm completely with you. Personally, selling watches to private buyers is something I really try to avoid. I'm willing to accept less from an AD just to have a worry free transaction. You're thinking of the tradeoffs exactly like I think of them and I recently did a similar deal.

Case study. Years back I sold an Omega Aqua Terra at a high discount to a college kid who I met on a forum like this one. Box and papers. Fairly new watch is almost mint condition. A day later he texts me saying I sold him a fake watch. I walked him through the papers. Then he said I sold him a grey market watch. I walked him through the receipt and the online AD. Then he says the watch was broken when I sold it to him and he wants his money back. In parallel, he posts an urgent thread on the same forum - in a complete panic saying he had just bought an Aqua Terra the day before ... left it on his dresser overnight ... knocked it off the dresser to a concrete floor in the middle of the night ... and now it lost 20 minutes the first day. I directed him back to his own thread and never heard from him again... but the entire hassle wasn't worth repeating if I don't have to.

Is $9500 a confirmed offer?

I would be surprised if they go for that bid value.

Especially considering the AP will need a service due to it's age.

I think that is reasonable, (On a trade-in @ an AD) going for the 10k...but having said that I wouldn't take a dime less.

Ask for 11 try and settle at 10.5 and ship the Daytona to save the tax.

I don't think the OP would be asking this question if AD would be willing to sell him/her the daytona at MSRP without a trade in the picture.

AD is trying to make some money here from AP, as an incentive, in return of selling a Daytona to him/her at MSRP.

Totally agree. The AD is in business to make money. How bad do you want the Daytona? I would keep the AP and tell the AD that I would simply like to purchase the Daytona.

It's not a terrible 'premium' to pay vs where the grey market is right now. Honestly, I'd go for it personally, especially given there's no guarantee you can get market on your own for the AP. I also prefer the Daytona to the AP diver.

I assume the tax is just on the difference between trade value and MSRP for the Daytona, so tax savings shipping it is probably minimal, I'd just go ahead and take the deal honestly, even at $9.5k.

17k is not bad for a Daytona from an AD with your name on the wnty card. And you don’t have to deal with selling the AP.
