Scarcity And Impulsivity...

On a biz trip today and, on a lark, stopped by an AD I had never been to, something I've been doing more of lately. Lo and behold, they had a 2017 SD43 in stock (no coronet). Due, I believe, to my frustration at never seeing good watches available in cases, I couldn't resist; I bought that bigger bugger!

In short, the scarcity made me temporarily insane and led me to a $11k impulse purchase, on something I'd have likely looked past previously. Hmmm..."it's working, master."

Will post pics tomorrow when back in front of my computer (and maybe an explanation for the wonderful wife).

Thanks. Most expensive impulse purchase of my life. Normally much more measured.

You gotta treat them mean to keep them keen. Worked perfectly here.

Hope you enjoy the watch

Yes that’s the grand plan. Yes I’ve succumb to it before. Congratulations.

Did the exact same thing two weeks ago. Complete impulse buy based on perceived scarcity. Amazing watch, though.

Definitely not alone. I could have written your post almost word for word, including going to an AD I’d never been to before who had just got one SD43 in the day before. I’m still not sure if it was a brilliant move or a stupid one on my part, but only time will tell.

I did exactly the same. Nearly wet myself when I saw a two tone sky dweller in the window (not a common occurance here in the U.K.). Bought it and then realised that the gold wasn’t for me. If all models were available, I’d never have bought a TT. Thankfully I got away with it and traded for a Daytona.

Congrats on the 43. Hope it sticks for you and well done for finding one.

Impulsivity that I wouldn’t be able to control is why I’m afraid to visit any ADs on a lark. I’m afraid of what I may see and be forced to make a decision on.

Yes, it happend to me as well. I didnt purchase a Rolex for many years. I started with Rolex but after a while i felt they were to common so i start collecting other brands. My interrest in Rolex came back after i saw the Explorer 2 and Milgauss blue in person. Walked in an AD to try them on and got the Explorer 2 polar. I liked them equally so 2 weeks later i was back to pick up the Milgauss as well. When the salesperson was doing the paperwork he showed me some watches from the safe. Try the SD43 he said. Once i tried it i forgot all about my just purchased Milgauss so the next day i called him to tell him i'll take the SD43 as well. So i bought 3 watches within a month. On top of that i have a DD Rosegold Green Dial 228235 on order which should take 3/4 months and i'm second on the list for a BLRO. So actualy i'm hoping i do NOT get the call any time soon. Next year would be fine:)

Same thing happened to me! It’s sitting in my safe fully stickers still But what a great watch that I’m keeping and maybe one day will start wearing!

Congratulations. Wear it for awhile and see if it works for you, if not, then move on. At 11k you will not get hurt on a flip.

Sage advice. One good part of the great Rolex scarcity is that now you don't have to worry about losing your shirt if a purchase doesn't work out for you.

And hopefully will help with the wife factor.

I must admit I'd be tempted too, except for my failsafe of only having cobwebs in my wallet with which to pay.

There are a couple, maybe three more Rolex watches that I wouldn't mind having in my collection and would wear frequently in rotation. I don't buy watches to sit in boxes doing nothing. In a sane world, I might wait a few years, knowing that when the urge became overwhelming and did not wear off , I could maybe find an excuse to treat myself. Today, on planet Bonkers, if I see one on display at an AD I will walk in and buy it.

Lol! It’s working master is right. The people that claim Rolex is killing their brand crack me up. Congrats, it’s a sweet watch!

You are 1000% right.

Rolex is doing better than ever.

Grey Market Pricing is cleaned up nicely. No more cesspool.

DJ, TT, PM sales are all up up up. Driven by general public purchases that would have needlessly gone to SS Sports.

SS Sports sales are up as well. Driven by FOMO, watches that otherwise would have been "think about" or "maybe" are now YES! I will buy! as is illustrated in the topic of this thread.

One little change in reference distribution has worked wonders.

Still, I do think the SD43 is an amazing watch. Sized perfectly (if not a little too heavy and thick), brilliant case and dial, and absolutely rock solid. If Rolex was trying to hype up sales of a DJ or TT, for me, it wouldn't work, no matter what the possible resale might be. I just would never wear one. The impulse had to fit the desire somehow. It probably also helped that it was the day before my 50th and the SD43's 50th anniversary vibe caught me.

Been in sales and marketing for most of my career, even. Spent 13 early years on a retail floor banging the scarcity drum (Burton and Oakley at the time), too.

Still...I went all impulsive. But I'm actually stoked I did it. Maybe I'm relaxing a bit in my old age.

Congrats. I picked one up rather impulsively too a couple weeks after picking up my Daytona C. It had just been rejected by the person that wanted it and was also sitting in the case. It was on my radar screen but not one I was actively trying to acquire right away.

Enjoy it.
