We are going to be in Switzerland next week, spending a few days with friends in Basel, and then three days in Wengen (and thereabouts) before taking a train to Zurich and spending a night there. Forecast for Wengen and Jungfrau Region is not good for the time we'd be there (Sept 5th - 8th) and our hotel is cancellable until tomorrow. Weather looks better in Lucerne, which we were planning on going to for the day when in Basel. Does it make more sense to just spend the three nights in Lucerne? We'd like to do some light hiking and see the natural beauty of Jungfrau, but if it rains every day, that might not be so great. Thoughts?

Ive always had a wonderful time in Zurich and also my single previous visit to Luzern.

I can feel confident saying without hyperbole, that the Vierwaldstättersee is probably one of the most beautiful places on Earth. If you have the right gear, then some light rain shouldn't be too much of a dampener. The weather can change pretty quickly so hard to plan ahead with certainty.

Luzern town itself is also stunning and plenty of indoor things to browse / do if the weather is really inclement.

If you have a car then there is also some amazing driving to be had !

Thanks! I think in Switzerland that are no wrong answers. We just got a little thrown by the weather forecast. But it's also over a week out, so who really knows? We'll stick with Wengen as a home base and pick and choose day trips when we're there.

Hey Chiboy, I’m headed there at the end of September and I’d appreciate any tips you think are worth sharing. I’ll be in Basel, Lucerne and Zurich. Some flexibility in that, but not a lot.

If you are going to Lucerne, take the trip to Interlaken.
The top of the Schilthorn is magnificent!
I will venture to say that is it the most spectacular place that I have ever been. Plus, as an added benefit, they sell beer at the top. Also, a must see is "The Dying lion of Lucerne" statue.

X2 Interlaken is fantastic. I went Canyoning and Paragliding along the Swiss Alps! Amazing.

The boat tour and the tram at Lake Luceren are fun things to do too.

I was in the Jungfrau region in early September one year and the weather was great. It can change quickly at any time and most people plane on a week there so that they can at least have a few days of great visibility and weather.

We are going again next October and will gamble on the weather as well since I really want my wife to see Wengen & Lauterbrunnen.

I highly recommend you visit Mt. Pilatus. My mode of transportation was the Gold Round Trip which was absolutely worth it. You reach the base via boat then take the cogwheel rail to the top and then transportation back to Kriens/Lucerne is covered. Easily half-day trip.

If you are planning to go up to the jungfrau you need goood weather. I believe it is about $178 pp to get to the top. If you go up their and it is cloudy you will see nothing. You will litterly be in a cloud. Like the other poster said the weather changes quickly.

Lucern is beautiful. Zermatt gets the best weather in Switzerland because of the way the mountains are. The matterhorn is there.

Interlaken is awesome. You can take day trips from there.
