How to add another Rolex to the collection, And getting the DW's consent...

I text the wife and tell her I would like to give my Submariner (116610Ln Date) to our son for going to college and being an all around good kid...and I found a Rolex that I would like to Re-Acquire...

She says that sounds fine... I get permission to wire the Cash. Hour later wire sent


Contact our Son, whom I think will be elated and l tell him that I want to give him an 8k Rolex but he has to wear it all the time. Swim with it, sleep with it, and shower with it...

His Reply, " I'm sorry for taking so long to get back to you. That is a nice watch and I'm not sure I want the responsibility of wearing a watch like that...
I need to think about it..."


First, I thought what planet did I land on and what Star Trek Episode is this...? Then I remember he works for the Apple store...

Then I text him back, I will keep it for you for when you are older...

So now I have one on the way, the Sub is still here, and the DW is happy...

Mission accomplished

I take it that your son knows how much you care for/about your watches and he’s just being honest and saying he’s not sure if he’s ready for the honor.

Maybe he’s genuinely worried about it? If you said ‘hey, it’s just a watch but a good one so please don’t lose it or sell it, but if you got mugged or lost your arm in an accident it wouldn’t be the end of the world.’

Or maybe you’re right and he sees it as a bit uncool.

I’d be curious to find out which it was if it were me.

Indeed, great Son but maybe he’s just sparing the OP’s feelings and maybe thinks he doesn’t want to wear an old, mechanical watch?

Getting seriously into watches these past few years and seeing so many posters say: I’m buying this for my Son & Daughter, I just think no you’re not, you’re buying it for yourself! And when they do come of age, they probably won’t want to wear a 20 year old watch?

A man and woman should forge their own way and although I appreciate old watches, I want to buy and wear my own, not have my dads old cast offs.

Exactly. I find it hilarious that people around here expect their kids to be interested in old mechanical watches. Sure, some will be, but Apple Watches are waaaaayyyy cooler to the majority of younger people. There's a reason it became the biggest selling watch in the world in just a few years.

I had exactly the same situation with my son when he started his engineering degree eight years ago.
He didn’t feel comfortable away from home with a Rolex but he did accept an Omega Moonwatch instead and the Subdate still sits bnib in my tin tank with his name on the card.

He is now a test engineer with a multinational, hopefully he will pick it up soon.

Funny my wife had the same "I don't want to have to worry about it" attitude when I wanted to buy her a Rolex. She simply didn't want the responsibility of having to take care of it or worry about it. I get it actually. Kids (and some wives) want cheap watches they can throw around and if they lose it they just buy another. Different story with Rolex.

I think that you made a nice gesture and I am sure your son will want the watch when he reaches that point in his life when the watch fits him. I get it and respect him for being straight up about his thoughts. Just wear it and when he is ready pass it along.

Yeah...I know mine isn't. He showed me how much he liked his new fossil watch the other day and how much better it looked than the one I was wearing. Hmm...

You think that's the reason why he denied it? I think he's not ready for it, he doesn't want the burden to wear an 8.000 USD watch.

It's not fun to keep in mind that you are wearing something this expensive while partying or doing whatever you want and try to stay carefree (getting robbed/breaking it/losing it/...). You want your head free of those worries, so an 8k watch isn't helping you.

What will his friends say/think, perhaps he's humble, doesn't want to flaunt, want to grind and work for it himself.

Many young people in teens and early twenties have different view on status and money what for example generations born before 1990 have. Value base is quite different. Of course trends change and quality watches might be their thing when they have reached over 30 years of age :D
