This Sucks When it Happens

Reviewing my financial accounts last night I noticed a substantial unknown charge on my credit card. Well you know what happened next. Turns out there were another 6 to 7 unknown charges over the last 48 hours. Total a little over $10K. Credit card company did deny a couple of others or the damage could have been twice the amount.

I'm encrypted up the wazoo but this still happens. They're writing it all off but I just hate all the hassle over the next couple of days. Waiting for the replacement card, calling companies who auto bill to the card, updating other linked financial items. If anyone has success at not having this happen I'm all ears. If you don't want to share it in public send me a PM.

Thieves and hackers suck the big one. Sorry it's the only way to say it for me.

Yes, it does suck.

I got off light and found the charges early.

Awful.
Has happened to me about 12 times in the last year.
My ID has also been stolen and used for loans as well.
Had to lock my credit for 7 years.

As for credit cards, fortunately I get emails on all charges and can catch it on the first charge. Still a hassle to wait for new card and change all vendors that auto bill. I have been able to better control it now by always generating a temporary credit card number with a set auth amount whenever I buy anything online.

My bank (USAA) called me first on the Saturday after Black Friday, asking about a bunch of charges totaling around $5k. It wasn't me, I said, and they proceeded to start denying them all, canceled the card and all that jazz... I feel your pain, Brenngun. I'm not sure how they are able to do it, but it's big business.

And I agree, thieves suck.

Happened to us this summer, pain in the behind especially changing all the online stores and services that are attached to that card.
We’re super careful but it still happens.
Years ago I received a call from my CC company asking if I was in Hong Kong making a purchase...

I had that happen to me too. Citibank called me while I was in HK, inquiring about a purchase made in a Paris Louis Vuitton store. Of course my card got cancelled, charges denied and the whole waiting for a new card thing...hate these thieves...

Happened to me a few months ago. Just one big charge at Lowe’s (home improvement store). I have text alerts setup for anytime a charge is made without my card being present, so I caught it right away. When the text came, I first called my wife to ask what she ordered. Wasn’t her so I knew it was fraud. Amex took care of it right away. Text alerts help.

Had this happen to me a few months back. Charge in a city I had never been to in my life. Called my bank immediately and they covered it. I was so pissed my wife had to calm me down. Damn scum of the earth!

My card company once called me on a Saturday morning to ask if I had just purchased $1500 of women's lingerie in India. I wanted to be able to say yes. I'm not sure it's a good sign that they no longer check up on the watch purchases . . . .

Seems like it happens to me every six months...seems like its AMEX or Discover card.
Back in Aug some jackass charged over 10k on my card. I think the C.C. companies should just send out new card numbers every 12 months.....going to happen sooner or later.

When they report on those massive credit info breaches on the news, we know it's not good but the stories never include the 'actual' consequences. Unfortunately, it seems this is now the norm.

Yeah that sucks...

I bought a OnePlus phone about a year ago, a few months later they told the press that their database was breached and 40k customers had their CC info stolen.
Surely enough, a day before I read that article a payment was made on a Chinese website with my credit card, glad it was only about 45 dollars so I blocked the card and didn't bother getting my money back.

I got a call yesterday from an Indian or Pakistani person claiming they were going to renew my subscription to Windows Defender. I never signed up for this service to begin with so I told him to cancel it. Then he wanted to take control of my computer (I assume to download my passwords and other personal info). I told him I would not allow that. He then hung up on me. Foiled another scammer.

Sorry you’re having this trouble Rick. That’s the second thread I’ve seen today on credit card scams.
If you haven’t done so already, set up alerts on your bank accounts and credit/debit cards so that you are notified immediately when there’s any activity, with or without the card being swiped.
This has worked for me so far. Much better to catch illegal activity as early as possible.
