First Rolex incoming!!!
Hi all I’m super happy to post my first Rolex incoming thread! Like many others I started collecting watches with a perception that Rolex watches were all overpriced hype. However as I was searching for a watch to celebrate my 10th anniversary I could not help but keep coming back to the 116710 GMT - it was the only watch that fit my specifications of having a GMT or worldtime complication, black bezel, significant wrist presence at 40mm, and a watch that can go with me from business meetings to my undersea adventures.
After trying it on at Howard Frum I connected with it instantly - the quality of the watch was amazing and I could see why Rolex attained the status that it has compared to other brands...it’s just such a classic beautiful watch that is built like a tank. So now that I’m fully on the Rolex camp the search was on... I checked watchrecon everyday for a 2015 reference in good condition since that is the year my marriage really started to turn around due to some hard work on both my and my wife’s part. The days that went by felt like weeks and weeks felt like months. Then I found TheWatchEnthusiast’s 116710LN here on TRF and started chatting about his watch and decided to pick the watch up - great watch and John’s a super cool dude. It’s supposed to arrive today on the coldest day in Chicago’s recorded history! How’s that for an entrance haha. Thanks also Spikedlee who offered his amazing 2018 116710LN but I didn’t end up picking up since I was looking for a 2015 - stay warm today bro! I can’t wait for it to arrive! Woohoo! |

I think this is one of the best GMTs. It fits in so many situations and has an amazingly useful complication. Looking forward to seeing some wrist shots.

You'll love it. I have one myself and can never come to grips with trading it for anything else. I personally think it is THE "check all the boxes" Rolex over the Submariner. Hope you don't dive too deep!

I think you picked a great one. I was going back and forth between that and a Sub. Went with the Sub, but I still question if I made the right decision. Congrats!

Yeah I had considered a sub or SD but I realized that I really would like a multiple time zone complication since I travel quite a bit and have friends around the world I’d like to stay better connected with. The GMT is also a bit less common and I love the green hand and dial text! Can’t go wrong with a sub if you don’t need the GMT complication though! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Beautiful watch!
If I may ask, why did you go with the black bezel insert instead of the more iconic colorful inserts? |

Congratulations on your first Rolex! I know it's a special feeling. I got my first 28 years ago, and I still remember the feeling when I first put it on my wrist. There's something special about wearing a Rolex and I think everyone here would agree...which is why we are here! You made a nice choice. Great looking piece, helpful GMT complication, date, classic Rolex sports "look" (I think the first watch that everyone thinks of as THE quintessential sports Rolex is the Submariner and your GMT has the look of a Sub yet it's not a Sub which I think is cool). Wear it in good health! That's a watch that can last you a lifetime.

Great question! Albatross hit the nail on its head below. To build on that- the LN is more conservative for professional environments and dressier than the bi-colored bezels - so if I were to choose one Rolex the 116710LN would be it. Quote:
