Need help pricing used black face Daytona
I need help pricing a used black face Dayton that I have come across. I am looking to purchase this watch and need help knowing what to offer. It is 1996-1997 watch based on serial number. It doesn't have box nor papers. Any help would be great! I will be sending it to Rolex to have it authenticated.

I assume you are only sending to Rolex for authentication AFTER it was already purchased?
How sure are you of the seller? |

Is this a best offer only, or is there a purchase price?

Zenith Daytona’s are getting silly money, and all for perception. This one looks to be well worn, not sure if polished.

Well, yes if you have verified all the other items. But it’s anyone’s guess what is inside a closed watchcase. El Primero should be in that one. You can check the other things about it with this chart. https://daytonainfo.files.wordpress..../lifecycle.jpg Now as to value - all depends on different aspects of dial and other matters. Could be a $20K watch up to a $50K one. Here is where an eBay auction with a high reserve could be your friend. Just set it up and you would have a market value soon enough. Based on lighting, it looks to be worse than it probably is. Ask if you can take it to a local watchmaker that knows Rolex and can open the caseback, check the serial numbers on the case side and bracelet to authenticate it. If it's legit and without box and papers, probably worth anywhere between 17-21k

Google DavidSW, a TRF Trusted Seller. A good place to start.

Terrible pictures. How are you so certain it's a 1996 or 1997 vintage when you didn't even know it's a zenith daytona?
Would you feel comfortable throwing out $12K at the seller based on what you know? I mean, it sounds like neither you or the seller know what you're looking at and at that price I would think it would be worth the risk but that is assuming you are absolutely certain it is authentic. Looks to be in good shape, just needs to be refinished and serviced. |

Not the best quality pictures, but that being said, watch looks pretty sharp, green hologram still visible, possibly unpolished. Does not have the inverted 6 at the 6'oclock subdial, consistent with versions made after the mid 90s. Would you be able to have the seller remove the bracelet and confirm reference number between lugs at 12 o'clock and at least the first letter (T, U, A etc etc) and two digits of the serial number at 6 o'clock? If all of the above checks out, I would comfortably pay 17-19k, for a watch only.

Zenith - 9 o’clock subdial is the seconds counter and goes to 60. Layout was flipped around post-Zenith.

Looks like a Zenith Daytona with non-SEL and old style folded claps. I'd have it authenticated.
Love to a SS Zenith Daytona but pricing is crazy now. Good luck! |

I don't know if it is real but that watch would be worth quite a bit if it is. A Zenith Daytona with some patina on the subs. I think about 30k ish?

I wonder if the OP still wants to buy it knowing that it is now a $20K watch and not a $9K watch. Unless he intends to low-ball the seller, who may not not realize its value.
After agreeing on a price, I'd send it to Rolex and have it serviced (which explicitly authenticates it) unless service history is known.

I wonder if the seller knows what he has.
Something doesn’t add up here. |

Would it not be best to have the watch authenticated/checked before you buy it?
It looks like an honest watch, but who knows what is inside the case... |

100% Zenith 4030 Daytona case, dial and bracelet. Who knows what’s inside, but if it’s real, it is Zenith El Primero that Rolex designated 4030 after mods to slow it down to 28800.
