Help Me Choose My Next Rolex

Hey guys,

I bought a 34mm Air-King 2 years ago and LOVE it. I'm now looking to acquire a sportier Rolex.

I have really small wrists and the 34mm air-king fits me perfect, so I'm a little sceptical of jumping up in size. The smaller sportier models seem to be from earlier years, for example the explorer II I think they made a smaller version a few years back.

Can anybody recommend some models for me to look at that are, sporty, fit a small wrist, attainable, and NOT a sub?

A SS or TT Daytona wears smaller than 40mm. Great watch. Try one on, it won't hurt.

I think the sub is the one Rolex I don't really have any interest in. It's too extroverted for me. I like the low profile models just like my older generation air-king.

This. New movement this year. Also 114270, 5 dig sub or gmt, Daytona wears beautifully, 38.5mm Aqua terra,

I would go with a 36mm DateJust with an oyster bracelet and either a domed or fluted bezel. The oyster will give it greater presence on the wrist.

Explorer 1. Look into the 36mm versions or the 39. Tudor as well, BB36 and BB58.

Explorer I is very nice but I find it too similar to my current 34mm air-king, I am looking at the smaller Explorer II though.

If you want a date complication, yes the 37mm YM would be very cool and not something most ppl own. If not, I’d go 36mm Exp 1, and never look back. Its not pretentious, but very classy, robust and super versatile. Best of luck, let us know which way you go with it.

Also looking at the Explorer II 36mm, but not sure if they are made anymore in that size or if I'd have to buy an older model...

Because of the wider bezel, the Yatchmaster I 37dial is smaller. Despite the 37 mm size, it looks small on my 6.75 cm wrist. Try the 40 as well. This might hit the sweet spot.

Go to Chrono 24 filter out all the larger size rolex watches stick with less than 40 mm. You will see what rolex watch you like . Good luck

Yes it looks like a great option. What do you think about the explorer II 36mm? Are they still made in 36mm?

Explorer II’s were 40mm until the recent 42mm version.

A 36 or 39mm explorer. I agree about the 34 mm air king. I have one from 1973 which I really enjoy. Another sleeper is the 40mm explorer 2 if you can find one. They have somewhat bad resale, which is a positive if you’re wanting one. Most desire the 42mm explorer 2. And yet another option, alresdy mentioned is a yacht master blue dial 37mm. In my opinion, the explorer one is among the most understated, elegant, under-appreciated rolexes in existence. Legibility is amazing: white gold,indices, Arabic combined with non Arabic ... very simple. I’ve received compliments on my 36mm explorer 1 (from 2003..) the blue dial yachtmaster is what I’d grab next if you like blue dials .... best to you.

The explorer II looks amazing but the 40mm size it putting me off, I’ll have to try one on. So far I may be leaning toward the Yachtmaster I 37mm but I’d like a rhodium dial instead of blue.

Exactly, do I need to buy a yacht with it or already have one?

But ya I’m looking at the rhodium dial 37mm, next move is a try on and I want to see how the blue second hand looks in person.

Don't let the 40mm Exp II size turn you off. Although the YM is 37mm I imagine it will have more wrist presence than the 40mm Exp II, being a lot flashier. I highly doubt your wrist is too small to pull off the Exp II. It's sporty, subtle, and still one of the best bargains out there for a SS sports Rolex. I'd probably go for the white dial, but black looks great too. Goor luck!

The YM plat dial was available in 35mm, called a mid sized. Now discontinued but easy to find on the 2nd hand market for a reasonable price. The new 37mm YM might work too.
