Sales Tax Avoidance
Looks like the days of avoiding sales tax with no boutique in your state are over.
Was notified that as of June 1, when shipping watches AP Boutiques now charge sales tax in all 50 states. |

Lucky me my 15500 arrived last week in May. Of course I pay all taxes regardless :)

Not surprised. A lot of businesses are doing this now.

Yep. Was notified of the new tax laws when I picked up my 5990. However, I was informed here are still 3 exempt states which I believe were Oregon, New Hampshire(?), and Montana(?). Oregon definitely, can’t rmemebr the other 2 for sure.
But was also told all the states have different implementation dates, some were already in effect last year and the laws differ between each state. Where there is still tax exemption but only to certain thresholds like 10, 25, 50, 100k etc.

I’m no expert on this matter but I think greys should be affected on this as well if they are following the laws... because my ad said basically all businesses now have to register in each state. So I suppose a private sale you are fine but for greys and “trusted sellers” I would think this would affect them as well as they are a business.

New, used or grey ... all online sales require sales tax to be paid ... Best bet now is to buy duty-free while travelling ... or private party sales ...

APs boutique being in LA is 9.5% sales tax. Not the end of the world but I’m sure any of us in CA already get taxed pretty heavily. Next they will be coming after capital gains/ordinary income on the sales of personal watches with the way they have been appreciating.

I’m not sure this is entirely accurate as i don’t believe it would be legal to charge sales tax when shipping to a state that does not have a sales tax ? Any accountants/lawyers please chime in.

AP & Patek have until now always seemed very well priced in the states, thats my view as a Brit looking on chrono 24 anyway.

I think this is great news, it just made people in high sales tax areas more reluctant to pull the trigger. I live in sales tax free Delaware, so it benefits me.

Wow.. interesting.. Just got in under the wire too I guess. Will they charge at the sales tax rate of the state being shipped to?

Rolex has also been doing this for some time now. I bought a GMT 2 months ago from the (Wempe) Rolex boutique in NYC and they said that they have to charge to tax at the rate in where the watch is being shipped. That said my friend had his shipped to a friend in NH and no tax was charged. So while it seems that there are options they're getting to be fewer and fewer.
