Accuracy. Was slow now fast

Hey Everyone,

I just wanted your opinion on whether this is normal. I've had my Explorer 1 just under 1 year now and until about 2 weeks ago it has been running consistently half a second slow per day. I've noticed it now appears to be running half a second fast per day. I was worried it was magnitised but I thought that would be quite a dramatic amount of seconds fast per day. I can't think of any changes that could have caused this. Is it normal for a Rolex to change from slow to fast?

Have you changed your wearing habits or normal activity while wearing the watch???
This could be it

That is a too small of a variation for the watch to be magnetised. You are fine.

You must be joking surely how can be half a second difference be like you put a dramatic amount of seconds. And your watch is not magnetised as if it was it would normally speed up by many many seconds or even minutes. or come to a complete stop. Many things effect mechanical watches almost daily such as gravity,mainspring-power-reserve,changes in temperatures, subtle changes in lubrication and friction, shocks on wrist when wearing, metal expansion and contraction, and so on.Some should remember there are 86400 seconds in a day and that the escapement of a mechanical watch in 24 hours pushes the gears 432,000 times.

Only a quartz watch can reliably give that level of precision over a long period. Your Explorer is doing incredibly well, I certainly would not fret. It’s a complex mechanical device, endlessly refined ....but inevitably limited.

I just picked up a Milgauss from around 2010 and it seems to be running JUST UNDER 3 seconds slow. But here is the thing, it doesn't seem to lose any real time when being worn during the day. I went to bed with it on my arm and when I woke up it was a about 2.5 seconds slow, and here we are 12 hours later and it is just a hair under 3 seconds slow. I am going to leave it on the bedstead face up tonight to see if it loses less.

It’s within expected parameters
I would say it’s super accurate if it’s running within +/- 0.5sec that’s amazing!
After all it’s a mechanical watch and will never be an atomic watch!!

I'm over the moon with the actual accuracy. I was just abit concerned that it's been - seconds for 1 year and now its changed to + seconds. Wasnt sure if its normal to switch between being slow and fast?

It totally is. I know mine varies a bit with my activity level. When I am working it is about +1.5 and on vacation it's about +2.5, just because I am a lot more active. At rest it's about +-0 (it's about the same in the morning as when I checked it the night before). It was probably regulated to 0 at service.

I've found that a slight variance such as this can be caused by the position in which you lay the watch down when not being worn (face down, face up, side) or even how much reserve the watch is running on.

As others have said, doesn't sound like an issue.

It's normal for any mechanical watch to have a variance throughout the day, week, or year, or within the boundary of it's state of wind.

If you are actually seeing such a tiny variance, wind it up; maybe it's just at the lower end of it's power curve.
