Who Here Has Been Singing the Song Wrong All This Time?

How many have thought you had the lyrics right until found out you had it all wrong?

My favorite story was with the song Europe’s Final Countdown. My first wife loved that song and would always sing along but sing ”There’s a Fire Downtown”. I would inwardly laugh but never told her different, why ruin it…as far as I know she sings it that way to this day.

Any other funny stories where you thought you knew the lyrics but later found out you didn’t?

I sing pretty much every Pearl Jam song wrong. As great as Eddie is he can be hard to understand…i.e. “Yellow Ledbetter” for the perfect example.

Just about every song I sing.

I’m always messing it up. My wife makes fun of me incessantly.

As a teenager I remember my mom filling out a newspaper competition. I don’t remember the Q but she had written “Hurry Through The Grapevine by Marvin Gaye” ..Oh, we laughed. “You know, mom, I HEARD IT THROUGH...like the saying”. The irony being that the song was really her generation.

Had that song been written before the 20th century that could have very well been the actual lyric.

Because I can't understand a lot of the lyrics of songs, I've developed the habit of just making up my own. I know that there wrong, but I don't care, because almost no one ever hears me sing.

It's always fun to run across the real lyrics and I always get a laugh at my own expense.

Towards the end of Stairway to Heaven, right after, "And if you listen very hard"
I know he's not saying "The Jew will bother you a lot", but it sure sounds like it.

Jailbreak by AC/DC

Instead of, "heartbeats they were racing freedom He was chasin'", an old girlfriend of mine thought it was, "hot meats".

My step sister heard “baby you’re a perfect ten” instead of “baby you’re a firework” in Katie Perry’s song firework. Don’t know how she came up with that.

Hi Robear,

I’m a big Eddie fan as well and I agree with you 100%. Almost impossible to get the lyrics unless you have it on paper. Even then it’s most likely wrong!

I believe there is an interview where Eddie talks about changing the lyrics because he doesn't even remember them.

One of the great early songs for misunderstood lyrics was "Louie, Louie." Everyone had their own lyrics, the dirtier the better. J. Edgar Hoover investigated.

Btw, there's a term for a misunderstood lyric: a "mondegreen." Coined by a writer named Sylvia Wright in a 1954 Harper's article.

Elton John singing "Hold me closer, Tony Danza." Apparently it's "tiny dancer."

And why was Kansas singing about "ducks in the wind?"

When Aerosmith came out with Walk this Way I was about 10 years old and wondered why someone would write a song about a "Horse Display".
