Gmt setting

How do you guys set your GMT? I originally had mine set where the 24h hand was the same time as my hour hand so when it was 10:00 am the 24h hand pointed to the 10 and so on. I just set the 24h hand to UMT and left my hour hand to my PST.

Just curious as I think this is the way the GMT was intended to be used so you can tell time in the 3rd time zone now by rotating the bezel. Or am I wrong?

No.... It is not the way the GMT was intended to be used.........

People frequently confuse the watch name, GMT, with the 24 hr hand and come to this conclusion..

The watch was designed so that Pilots who flew intercontinental could keep track of their home time-zone, regulate their movements, and avoid jet-lag.

Originally the hands were synced, so the bezel was rotated to the new time-zone you flew to, but you still knew home-time on the dial.

An alternative was to rotate the bezel to Zulu (GMT, UTC, etc) so you could know the universal Air Traffic Control time at a glance..........but the dial was still set to home-time..

Today, it is still designed to show home-time, however, that stays now on the bezel using the 24 hr. hand, and the jump feature is used to go through time-zones so you know the time where you are, and your home-time......You can still rotate your bezel to "see" GMT time if you need it since your home time is always a constant + or - from that standard.

The reality, though, is that you can set it any way that you want..........if you have a need to always display GMT then, by all means...do so..

True, but if it the 24 hour hand is set to your home time (let's say US Mountain), what if you want to track the time in Jakarta, or Hong Kong, or Bosnia? You'd have to figure out how many hours away from your home time those countries are, and also consider if you are observing DST for that offset or not.

With the 24 hour hand set to GMT, it's very quick to rotate the bezel to track any country, as a readily available GMT chart shows the offsets from GMT. You could always keep the bezel set to your home time.

My point is simply that GMT is a world standard, so it makes sense to have that the default setting for the 24 hour hand, and still get 24 hour hand set to anywhere you like.

I was answering the original Posters query........The GMT was not originally designed to track the time in Jakarta, Hong Kong, or Bosnia....... It was designed to track your home time so you could keep your eating and sleeping habits from home while in a different zone, to help prevent jet-lag.

As I said, if you, or anybody else, chooses to ue it differently...fine by me.......

A very good point and you're right - the original purpose was to track your home time to prevent jet lag. What is really great is that now with the independent 24-hour hand and the 12-hour hand jump capabilities, it's very easy to use it in many configurations.

The great thing is you can use the GMT any way you like, and whatever way works for you is the right way to use it.

The original intention was (and the way I use it):

1. Set the 24 hour hand to GMT (with the bezel set at the default)
2. Set the 12 hour hand to your local time (wherever you are at the moment)
3. If traveling, reset the 12 hour hand to the local time, and rotate the bezel to show your home time with the 24 hour hand, so you'll know what time it is back home, and with a 24 hour hand, you know if it's AM or PM
4. Rotate the bezel so that you can track any other timezone you wish. For example, at home, I keep the bezel rotated to show Japan Standard Time (JST) so I know when to email/call my customer in Tokyo. When I travel to Tokyo, I change the bezel to reflect home time. With the 24 hour hand set to GMT, it's easy to look up any other time relative to GMT as this is readily available (JST is GMT+9, so I just rotate the bezel to "9")

If you want your 24 hour hand to show the local time, just rotate the bezel to reflect it.

When you travel you set the red hand to your home time, and when you are not travel you set the red hand to AM/PM time

i set mine to japanese time as i deal with co workers there on a daily basis, nice to know what time it is over there so i dont call them too early or too late. i set my home time to dial and japan time to bezel, i also have relatives in the philippines so i know that they are 1 hour behind japan.

When I'm in California - PST or PDT, and the red hand is +16/+17 for local time in Japan (where I do a lot of business). This week, I am in Washington DC, so I set it for EDT, and the red hand is set at +13 (local time in Japan).

I set mine to GMT. I like knowing what time it is in London!

When I travel overseas, I set it to home time.

I'm a simple kind of guy. I set the 24 hour hand to home time and the hour hand to local time. Most of the time, they are synched. But when I travel (as now when I am on the West Coast), I set the small hour hand to local time because it's a jump hand and easy to reset without having to stop the minute hand. Tomorrow, when I head back East, it will be a simple deal to reset the hour hand to home time.
