watch dead oyster date

Watch stopped working today.... shook it and it would work for 30 secs or so and then go dead..... Did the wound it by hand and it seems to be working fine now.... Never had to do that in the 8 years I owned it. After being shacken shouldn't it work on its own and stay working?

If it's 8 years old its time for a service that's all... The oils inside the movement are to the point that they're not very effective anymore and that's what's preventing the automatic winding mechanism to wind your watch properly with just the movement of your wrist.
So, take it in for an oil-change I would say!

So the watch is dead, but you wound it an it is ok?

Just wind the watch every once in a while.
