Society really needs to learn how to communicate and compromise. If you're going to sit in the back of the plane where seats are now tighter than ever, reclining isn't going to be received well.

Not everyone can afford to fly up front. Not every flight has a seat available up front.

My standpoint is that both were in the wrong. I'm not picking winners here, only losers.

We're only hearing her side of the story — which, frankly, sounds melodramatic at best. She had a grin on her face as she looked back and threatened to get the FBI involved. Plus she got x-rays and claimed back issues.

It was a 90 minute flight in daytime. She could have sat upright for 90 minutes of her life and he could have not been so juvenile. But, without hearing the words they exchanged it's hard making a judgment here.

So, all I can say is that people need to learn to get along.

If everybodys seat is upright, everybody has the same amount of space. If everybodys seat is reclined, everybody has the same space. Problems only arise when some recline and some don’t. I’ve always wondered whether airlines should mandate when all seats should be reclined (i.e. any time a meal is not being served).

Obviously that wouldn’t help the poor sods sitting in the row ahead of a bulkhead/bog area like this guy.

Actuall this is not true. I am 6"3 and my knees are usually imbedded into the seat back in front of me when I can not get premium seating. No amount of reclining my seat back alleviates that and when the person in front of me reclines it becomes exasperating and painfull.

Fair enough, though the first part of what I said is still true - everybody has the same amount of space and technically you’re paying for space rather than anything else.

I take your point that it’s worse for you than most when folks recline. As I’m an inch shy of you, I can empathise.

On my last flight with my wife, our seats didn’t recline. The ladies in front of us reclined to the max. Not only that, but every time they reclined, they’d come crashing down on my knees. I’m 6’3” and 225lbs and I swear I was staring down at the lady’s bald spot she was so far back leaned into me.

I had some wine and food and I couldn’t even access the pocket in front of me or my carry on below the seat. My knees were wedged in tight to each side and I couldn’t move. It was a direct flight from LA to Philly, 5hrs of being cramped up like that.

I think this lacks total regard to your fellow humans.


Now how about the smelly feet that appear next to your seat.... damnit

It's really time to blame the airlines, NOT the people who choose to recline. Of course there is business and first class. Or be a politician claiming to care about the climate and fly private jet. There's very good money is climate change. ;-)

Cattle-class is a horrible place to be.
I remember in my young days, air travel was nice. There was some room even in Economy, they gave you something edible and a coffee - well the coffee was never good, but at least people bathed before flying.
Nowdays you are jammed in like sardines with a whole lot of smelly inconsiderate people who jam up the overhead lockers with their carry-ons and other junk so that there is nowhere to put your hat or coat.
The recline/don't recline thing has been a problem for a long time and the airlines don't want to know - too hard. You put your drink on the tray-table and the person in front reclines their seat with a sudden movement. Oh, the joy.
I would rather drive.

There is generally a time to recline and a time to have the seat fairly upright. I hate people that are inconsiderate and just recline and smash me. Those people only care for themselves. He is in a bad spot because he can't recline, so his space is gone no matter what he does. As far as "assault" she's an idiot. She even looks like the "I want to talk to the manger" type.

This will happen to you even if you don't recline. Weak, fat, lazy people use your headrest as a pull bar. You manage to fall asleep for some much needed rest and don't redline so you won't be disturbed, but some losers can't manage to push up off their own armrests and stand under their own power.

This happens even in business class where there is zero reason to pull down on the seat in fromt of you other than being a clueless jackass that likely loses at all other aspects of life as well as common courtesy.

I'm not accusing you of that Matt, you clearly stated that you don't do it unless there is no other method to stand.

The problem most recently occurred while taking my elderly mom down to Florida. She could not get out of the middle seat to let me through, and the nice family in front of us were all comfortably reclined into our row (my sister completed our trio in the row). When you gotta go, . . . .

Both of these clowns should have been kicked off at cruising altitude.

If the airlines banned all the flying jackasses, each flight would be 75% empty.

But I have an alternative view for all who are dis-served by airline cramming strategies. Over 10 years ago I switched to 100% First Class. Company reimbursed for “Coach” and I covered the rest. Now retired, I cover the whole thing.

Best decision EVER...

If you can afford multiple Rolex models in the watch case then this is the solution to the morons acting badly.

While I don't agree with his behavior, these seat configurations are ridiculous at times on some aircraft, and with him in a seat against a bulkhead which does not recline and then her deciding to just go into a full recline in front of him, I know it was like she was sitting on his lap with her hair like 3 inches from his face. I've been there. Not a great place to be and I feel his frustration. But he handled it wrong. But...this resulted in X-Rays? Come on.

The govt should have never allowed the airlines to pack people in this close, and the seat designs should not allow a reclining seat to impact a passenger behind them.

People are actually far larger than the 1960s and the seat width, and legroom is far less. And saying that too bad, fly first class, is a nonstarter because there are not enough first class seats.

Flying is stressful to some people and adding to it by airline stupidity doesn't help.

Fly in an economy plus seat, or fly JetBlue which provides more room even on the cheapest seats. Of course, you may pay$10 more than the cut rate bargain basement price that you are willing to part with.

You get what you pay for.

This is an airline issue, not a passenger issue (all behaved horribly but it is the airline that created the underlying issues)

IMO, 2 complete idiots. It's an hour and a half flight, sit up straight! Then the a$$hole pounding on the seat is a douchebag also. I wonder if it was a man, would he have done the same thing? The part about her having to go and get xrays and miss work is the problem with todays society. Calling it an "assault" is a slap in the face for people who really are victims of an assault.
