Air King gaining value
I don't know what's happening, but my Bloodhound AK is gaining value like crazy on chrono24, it's rising since the beginning of February. Discontinuation incoming? Why is it gaining so much?

It's actually lost value. It's now going for ~8150 CAD. It was at its peak 8 months ago.
I've picked up an AK for 6500 CAD back in 2017. Easy. |

Gaining...Okay..And selling as well?
Unfortunately no airplane propeller illusion bezels (the main point of an Airking) anymore since several years...Soon it will come again I hope. So I can start caring about its prices... I miss those turning airplane propeller illustrated bezels and roman numerals...So cool... 2001..when things were simple... |

IYou had me all excited as I only got mine last week. 've had a look on Chrono 24 UK and they are barely over list. List is £5150 and they are up there for £5175. I won't be selling anyway.

Mine gained between 1500 and 2000$. I'm in Canada, so maybe the currency is paying too...

Prices of the 116900 AKII indeed are on the rise for some time already......a couple of months ago 5-10% below MSRP..........and now MSRP to plus 10% on MSRP.....plus the approx. 5% price increase that will be applicable from Jan. 1st. It has moved as a wallflower to the dance floor....... More and more people that have seen it before start to consider it as a "one of a kind" Rolex model; not comparable with any other toolmodel.....it certainly is.... ......"there is just something about it, it’s like this totally one off Rolex"...... It is the only Rolex tool watch with one/double digit figures on the dial.....the 3, 6 and 9 are white gold. As a true flight/instrument watch it shares the anti magnetic features (and the case) of the Milgauss without its $ 1,5k higher price. The AK history starts in 1945 as a honor of Rolex to the English RAF pilots fighting in WW II. This AK II is sold up till now in limited quantities and probably will not been produced for a long time any more imo......it is also possible that during Basel 2020 model changes are presented or even an production stop .... It is the only Rolex with the Rolex crown in yellow and the Rolex name and sec. pointer in green....both synonymous for the 2 Rolex trademark colours and up till now it is produced in very low/minor numbers!!! Altogether ingredients for a valued future classic .........? |

Honestly, they may appear to be on the rise but that’s an internet pricing illusion. In the US, Asking price is inflated over actual selling price on the AK model. It’s a very slow mover even among grays. The Explorer beats it easily and has increased exponentially in the gray market selling price.

Seen it sitting in windows lately, not gaining here in Europe.
The Air-King was most likely made because Rolex had a bunch of Milgauss cases and 3131 movements knocking about and not moving. So just make a dial and handset, brush the bracelet, and you shift a few more units. This makes sense too as to why Rolex used the same antimagnetic movement when there wouldnt have been any real need, its not marketed as magnet resistant like the Milgauss is. My prediction: Milgauss and Air-King will be out of production within 1-3 years as Rolex phase out the 31XX calibre, and they will never return because they're pointless now that the 32XX movement is so antimagnetic in itself... Future value? Who knows, they're ugly and unpopular watches, just like the original Milgauss was.... but made in much bigger numbers. It may become like the EX2 a very slow but steady climber? |

The AK II is an underrated gem at the moment .......it is very "non-Rolex" for many ........but therefore the ultimate Rolex imo..... It stands out of the usual Rolex-crowd and I am pretty sure that once it will be a much sought after classic... |

The Air King should always hold a good value even if goes up or down a little considering its price of entry. I personally think its a great looking piece especially for being so unique and kind of against the Rolex grain. I don't believe Rolex really makes an ugly watch even though there are some that I don't like or ever want to own. I'm not a Daytona fan and turned one down from my AD but that doesn't mean I think it's ugly, just not for me. There's an ass for every seat... or I should say, A wrist for every watch. I did have an AK but decided to move it on having a chance for a quick and good deal by trading it for a new Polar (another loser) haha. Love my Zblue too, thats one beautiful loser I'll never let go. hehee. Too many watches, Too little time.

If you want to sell your watch the most you'll ever get for your Air-King is a week before Basel; the least, a week after.

That's a pretty strong accusation, considering this rumor has been around for at least a few weeks.

"It's gaining value like crazy!... Discontinuation incoming?" Yep, OP is getting ready to sell. Works like the stock market before you short a stock.

See what you get when you, as a private individual, actually sell. Assuming of course that you don't get ripped off, phony check, no shows, disgruntled buyers, etc.

A month ago I decided to get my collection “valued” out of sheer curiosity (I don’t sell/flip, only hoard). Watchfinder - who are admittedly not the best value either buying or selling - listed the Rhodium OP for £5.2k and their offer for mine was £3.2-3.4k. So on an AK bought at retail you’ll be taking a bath of 25% off what you paid bare minimum if you decide to sell, which is decent by generic watch standards, but not especially impressive. As pointed out above, any apparent rise on this reference is less to do with its intrinsic popularity or impending disco and more to do with the aphorism a rising tide lifts all boats.

LOL
Next thing we are going to see threads of the OP gaining in value. The list/asking on Chrono or whatever is NOT what they are selling for. Go try sell one. No-one will even pay MSRP for your used piece. |
