Tired of Rolex.

Does anybody else feel like this?

For the past couple of months, I've been feeling a bit down on the whole Rolex thing. The name doesn't excite me anymore and owning one feels a little like a drag.

Just last week I read the comments from Clarkson in The Times and whilst he is mostly comes across a boorish bigot, I'm beginning to agree with him on his opinions of Rolex.

I'm sick of all the BS that comes with owning a Rolex. I'm sick of the stereotypes.

Add to this, the lastest rubbish that's come out at Basel and this big watch/dj are for women garbage and I'm thinking I want out.

I'd never ditch the 57 OD (it's still at the watchmakers) but I've been thinking about losing the LV for something a little different.

I would love a BP FF but I don't think funds are available for that now even with the sale or trade of the LV.

Perhaps that's the problem, being able to afford a luxury watch?

I look at stuff that needs doing to the house and I think I'd be better off both financially and within my soul, if I ditched the expensive watches and just got on with my life.

Yeah, my reaction is more that Rolex is moving away from its roots with these newer models. I do like the idea of the 41mm DJ and so on, but I think the 36 is the traditional DJ. I don't like the blue of the new TT Sub. But when it comes down to it, I love my Submariner. I wouldn't trade it for anything. I had a 36mm DJ with the new clasp and I loved that watch as well. I personally have not had any issues with the stigma of being a Rolex owner. I will continue to own a Rolex and will add to my collection soon enough. However, I won't be buying some of the newer ones.

Owning a luxury watch is certainly a LUXURY. And, in these difficult and uncertain economic times, it is not at all unreasonable to have different priorities...and unfortunately, those higher priorities (i.e. home improvements, etc.) often come with a hefty price too. When pressed with things that need to get done and limited resources to get them done, the simple (and often painful) truth is this.....luxury items like fancy watches and cars, sometimes must go, period.

In better times, new opportunities will present themselves, and perhaps then, you can go out and start collecting high ticket watches again - they'll always be available, for a price.

It's not just the money though. If I did flip the LV my first prioroty would be another watch perhaps a Jlc, IWC or a Moonwatch.

In the real world, no one ever even notices mine much less makes unpleasant comments about it. The only people who dis my watch are other WIS, and I think it's more an "in" thing that an actual opinion. You're not really a WIS unless you hate Rolex, only wear SS watches, disdain diamonds, loathe quartz, and insist that anything under 42mm is a woman's watch.

It's silly and I suspect many people don't really feel that way, they're just trying to fit in. It's about trends and next year it'll be something else.

I love my watch (which I wear on my left wrist). Everyone else can hate it if they want. No skin off my teeth. The only baggage that comes with wearing a Rolex is the baggage you let other people hang on you.

It's too bad that more WIS don't have better manners though. I never, never, never insult someone else's watch. It's totally rude. But I've noticed my mom raised me with much better manners than a lot of other people on watch fora.

If, on the other hand, you've just decided you'd prefer something else, more power to you. Enjoy the hunt. Shopping for a new watch is always fun and I wish you well. You need to wear what makes you happy.

Its a fact of life, there will always be things that need to be done around the house. If you sell your Rolex to fund other projects, the hunger will come back and you will probably regret selling it - This is what happened to me.

I find it difficult to relate to any of the newer models, and the blingy hype attached. The new women's DJ is typical of marketing hype but at the end of the day that is all it is image and wordplay. You don't have to believe it.
Rise above it all my friend, transport yourself back to the reality of the sixties, submariners and James Bond, GMT and Pussy Galore, airline pilots. Now there was better marketing.
If you sell your LV get a speedmaster moonwatch and a Tudor sub then all will be well in the world.

A Rolex will always be a ROLEX!!!!

There will never be another feeling like strapping on a Rolex timepiece for the first time and calling it yours!.

I can remember doing just that outside Bucherer's in Lucerne Switzerland. I sat my hiney down on one of those cold concrete benches outside of their shoppe there and had a couple of other tourists sit down next to us. They both commented on my new Rolex YM TT Black MOP dial! Heaven on Earth at that moment to me!

Rolex will always have a special place in my heart. Not only because it is one of the finest in house timepieces out there today, but because it was a Crown in this era of my life!

What else can ever be said??

i hear you jim! before i purchased my first rolex i thought it was the ultimate watch then i started reading about them and realize it was the "it" watch but not the watches of all watches. but i'm never tired of mine i don't i will never get rid of mine(yeah right). But a Rolex is a Rolex it's my first love i will always have one and hoping to get that TT sub cerachrome next year. But i am contemplating on that BPFF and the PAM88

Jim, take some time and think about your present situation. Remember think before you react!!! Right now you are feeling down and priorities can change. Just put your Rolexes away for awhile and pursue your other interests. If you need to work on the home then put your energy into those projects and then see where you stand. But you once had a passion for your watches and down the road your interest may be rekindled!!!

Jim, I agree with you. While I probably will never sell the 2 Rolex' I have I really can't justify anymore "luxury watch" purchases, not with all that needs to be done at home and 2 in college. I consider myself fortunate to have the ones I have and really don't like any of the new Rolex offerings anyway. Maybe someday when all 3 are thru college and everything else is done that needs to be done I can treat myself to something other than a Rolex.

You cant drive it like a Ferrari or BMW etc.
Its not a boat to fish or ski
Its not a plane to fly around in.
Not a gun you can shoot.
Not even a Beer you drink
All you can do is tell time with it and I agree they are moving away from
designs that I like (IMHO) to attract younger buyers....which is a smart marketing move also (IMHO)....Younger buyer may buy 2/3 or more watches in their life vs an old fart like me that MAYBE might buy one.

Been there done that Jim. I think we all think that from time to time. You will regret it. I did just what you are talking about 20 years ago. And that is how I ended up here. It never goes away you can try and replace it with other things but the love of the watch will still be there.. Having said that here is my take on it. I feel in love with the ones I bought 20 years ago. The classics. I could care less about the new ones. Don't even look at them. Don't care for Sels, new clasps, harder steel, bigger cases, ceramic bezels, blue hair springs and ext! There was nothing wrong with the old ones. They don't have to change anything. But they are in it to make money and they have to change. I don't have to . Give me the vintage. Plastic, and folded bracelets. I don't care about the dates or quicksets ( but it is handy) hell just put A Sub no date on a nato to me "perfect" I don't care what every one else thinks. Thats what it is to me. The classic Rolex look that has always been. That is what I love. Like I said before, you wouldn't repaint the Mona Lisa. She's perfect the way she is. Stay around Buddy, I would miss you greatly

Rolex, Pam (not all are hugh!!!, they make 40mm, 42mm), BP, Omega, JLC.

I talked to her about trading the LV and some cash for a BP FF but her response was "But that was the one you really wanted. If you had to pick again from scratch what would you go for?"
