RIP Grant Imahara Mythbusters

Wow! Mythbusters was a show both my kids and I watched constantly in the early-mid 2000s. Sorry to hear of his passing- he was really one of the pillars of the show. Damn- 49 is so young...and such a good and creative mind to boot. RIP

I enjoyed “Mythbusters.” I was unaware of Grant’s electrical engineering background or his movie work with Industrial Light and Magic. A very bright guy. Very sad.

Wow very sad. I love that show and Grant was the geekiest of them all.

I still have a crush on Kari after all these years.

Very sad, I really enjoyed his participation on the show. Joey or some other Doctor, can you weigh in on the cause? Was this as sudden as it sounds?

He ruptured a brain aneurysm, a weakened, ballooned artery in the brain that suddenly breaks open. Pressure builds up quickly in the brain, and death is very often the result. My dad died of a ruptured brain aneurysm at age 69, my paternal grandmother at age 63 of a BA, and my maternal grandmother at age 38 of a BA.

Was shocked to read he was 49.
Thought of him as even younger.
Guess I was remembering him from the early days of that show.

RIP

Very shocked to read this. I really liked him on the show. Are there any symptoms of a brain aneurysm before you actually have one?

For some people, the first symptom of a brain aneurysm is when it ruptures. Sudden, severe headache followed by loss of consciousness. Others have symptoms for days, weeks or years before a rupture including chronic headaches, blurred or double vision, a droopy eyelid, dilated pupil and occasionally weakness. A magnetic resonance angiogram can diagnose the presence or absence of a BA.

Yup, CNIII palsy with blown pupil is an immediate ER visit.

This is what I was afraid of. Seems like in most people the first symptom they ever see or notice is the actual aneurysm. Very frightening. Good information, thanks for posting!

I read that he was having severe headaches for several days. During dinner, he became very dizzy and experienced numbness on one side of his body. His girlfriend called EMS and he was transported, diagnosed, and had two surgeries. When they were doing a MRI for third surgery they realized the extent of damage that had occurred and took him off of the life saving equipment.

....I'm not a doctor and don't even play one on internet forums, but I think it can go either way. Symptoms for a while or sudden death - scary stuff!!
