do i still need to send in rolex for service if not worn?

I bought 2 brand new rolexes back in 2011:

submariner
gmt master ii

I wore the Sub daily for one year. Then bought GMT, but never wore it.

Then i never wore them again, been sitting in their original boxes for the last 8 years. Because i changed job, so didn't want wear rolex to work.

do i still need to send them in for regular maintenance?

Maybe wind it to see if it works. If it doesn’t, send it in for service.

Imo if you don't plan to wear them right now then don't service them. Not a bad idea to service a watch that has been sitting for 10 years if you plan to start wearing it regularly again. I think the oils could break down a bit after that long but I could be wrong. Someone feel free to correct me.

You do not need a watch winder. Just set the time, wind a few times and off you go. I would not even bother setting the dates given the limited wear. Easy as that.

My advice is sell the watches to someone who will wear them and appreciate them.

Your kid might appreciate it more knowing that it was the watch that his dad wore every day and loved, rather than it sat in a box in a drawer until you died.

It's just a watch. We have watches we never wore just to pass it down.

This. I started my own family tradition. I have two boys. The first one just graduated in mechanical engineering and for his gift I gave him my 1993 ish Submariner that my wife gave me for an anniversary. Watch was worn all the time. It’s been in for service and looking new again so he got that. Knowing I was going to do this in about 2015 I bought another sub and will do the same for the next son.

Seeing his expression I knew it was special because he knew how much I loved and wore that watch. I think it would have meant nothing if it was some watch that meant nothing and was just sitting in the safe but too each his own I guess.

So you're confident your kid will wear them to his job? What if he follows your idea and keep them for his kids?

Just wear it every weekend and then if its keeping time well, don't bother with service and if its losing time or gaining time, send it for service!

Kid won't need a job... Just sell the near new Rolex watches and live off the proceeds.

Oh come on, there are more than enough pieces available for those wanting to wear

OP, if you appreciate your pieces in the box rather than on your wrist, enjoy your collection however you want to My opinion on servicing is if it runs, you should be fine. If you want to take it into the water, a pressure test is recommended to make sure the gaskets don't need replacing.

Should always wind up a watch 40 crown turns once a month even if never worn.

I would only service if they didn't keep time properly.

Why service any watch ain’t broken ?

Servicing a watch which is not going to be used is a total waste of time and money

If you haven't used them for 8 years the lubricants may have dried out, which leads to inaccuracies and possibly damage. I'd have them serviced just to be on the safe side but that's more if you're planning on wearing them regularly.

P.S be prepared to get a slap at the AD for not wearing high demand models for 8 years

They're basically new, modern ones with modern oils. I wouldn't bother doing anything to them except wind and wear for a day once in a while.

thats what i thought. they are practically new oils. oils only break down if there is heat and mechanical movement involved. I plan to wear regularly again in the future, but based on feedbacks, i think gonna leave them as is till then.
