Air King 5504 (1958) hands and box question
Dear all,
First of all I would like to properly introduce myself as I noticed that I haven’t done that yet. My name is Chiel, living and working in The Netherland and (off course, given my presence here) I am into watches and Rolex in particular. The passion for Rolex is common in my family and as a result of that I was recently able to add my grandfather’s Air King (5504, 1958) to my collection. I am very happy and honoured with that and I wanted to share the news with other enthusiasts. In recent months, the watch has been serviced at Rolex in Geneva, where only the movement has been worked on and a new plexi has been installed. The bracelet was replaced sometime in the 1990s and the hands are unfortunately not original with the dial, in terms of style and lume. So albeit changes have been done before this most recent service (bracelet and hands) this Air King has not deviated further from its original design during the last service. Now I will try to bring it back to former luster as much as possible and wear it in my grandfathers honour. The matching hands in particular is something that I would like to change with a suitable hand set. Is there possibly someone here who has or knows a suitable set? As far as I could find, this should have "sword-like" hands with a blued second hand? Is there someone who can confirm this? I also have a box with it. "A" box because I am not entirely sure if this is the correct box for a 5504 from that period. Maybe someone knows that? Many thanks for your response, Chiel ps: plan was to add some pictures, but I'm not yet allowed to link to external pages and the files are too big for attachments. |

Please find below pictures of the watch and the box. Still looking for a set of matching hands, in case anyone has a set available, please let me know.

Gonna be hard the find the exact hands but if you keep searching EBay for “Rolex Alpha Hands” you should find something. Most likely you will see that the hands were originally for a datejust 1600, 1601 or 1603 which is fine since they basically have the same movement and same case size as the 5504. Since your dial has lume dots on it you need to find hands with lume as well. Preferably radium lume but that’s even harder. Every so often these hands will pop up and should cost around $300. You can also find a few Rolex parts dealers on IG and ask them as well.
