First Rolex real or fake?

Ive always wanted a Air-King bc they are under the radar, and only real watch guys and gal would probably notice. I found a guy on eBay with no sales or feedback. I bought the watch and the day it was delivered he deleted his account. I figured I had protection with PayPal.

Real or fake?

I don't know what I was thinking. I figured eBay would protect me. Im a gambler I guess. I keep looking at the sec hand and it doesn't look like a smooth sweep.

It won't be smooth because it's a 1520 cal. movement which only runs at 19,800 bph. Watch looks ok.

That’s because that movement runs at 19,800 bph, it’s not going to be perfectly smooth. Modern Rolex run at 28,800 bph and even they aren’t a perfectly smooth sweep. The “smooth sweep” thing is urban legend invented by clueless idiots.

Regardless of the photos, I would never buy any Rolex at any price from someone with 0 feedback on eBay

The watch most certainly is real, and while I am sure that model has been faked, it's not exactly a model that would likely to be counterfeited, especially since it has been out of production for many years. Frankenwatch yes...Rolex did offer the 5500 with an Explorer dial, and people have modified Air Kings in that regard. Obviously that isn't much of a concern here.

I would be concered that the watch was stolen, however. Considering that seller immediately terminated their eBay account is a bit of a Red Flag, at least it is to me.

That said, you are going to hear a saying throughout the WIS Community (Watch Idiot Savant in case you don't know what WIS means) that states "Buy the Seller" - What this essentially means is doing business with established, verified and TRUSTED dealers. There are many wonderful dealers in Vintage, Pre-Owned and Modern Luxury Timepieces. I would suggest doing business with these types in the future if you wish to further explore this hobby.

A quick internet search and/or post on here or another watch site will give you peace of mind regarding a seller that you wish to do business with.

FWIW, I have dealt with the following Grey/Used Dealers without issue:

Watchbox/Govberg
DavidSW
Bernard Watch

Don't purchase luxury goods, especially used ones, on a whim. That's a recipe for DISASTER. Keep your friggen whits about you, and don't let your money burn a hole in your pocket. Stay SANE and be PATIENT.

I definitely will be going though a dealer next time. Thank you for the suggested dealers, and words of wisdom. I look forward to learning more.

When did you buy this watch? Asking because I thought eBay recently launched their authenticity guarantee for watches over $2k (not sure what you paid) i.e. watch is shipped for authentication first and then to the buyer if it is 100% legit. That being said, buying a Rolex with 0 feedback is a foolish move but I think you know that already.

All I know is the money is not in my account. His name was engraved on the watch. It matched the name on the original usps invoice. It also came with warranty card and box from RSC. I’m not sure what Ebays policies are. I would like to verify it’s not stolen. I’m not sure how to go bout that. I do have the gentleman address and info.

Could be stolen, why’s he deleted his zero feedback account? I’d be worried.

Did seller possibly delete their account because they sold their one watch for sale? I don’t find it incredibly out of order that someone wants to sell one item to more of an audience than craigslist and then deletes their account afterwards. They’re not selling more items so why keep the account?

I’m just bringing to light another theory instead of automatically assuming the watch is counterfeit.

Who gets their name engraved on the back of a counterfeit watch or anything for that matter?

IMO, it’s possible the seller had some circumstance that made them have to part with their beloved watch. They started an eBay account to list the watch and then deleted it once sold. They could have deleted account because it was hard to sell said watch and brings up bad memories or because that’s the only thing they had to sell.

I try to look at everything in a positive way instead of automatically taking a negative position. Makes life a lot easier.
