The auction result speaks about the owner not the watch and of course this is true of the Paul Newman Daytona or any other 'celebrity-owned' watch.
IMHO it is not an attractive watch but some might say the same about the vintage Daytona. It's all about the 'bragging-rights'.

The romanticism of product placement in a movie seems to be equaled by the affection for actors in a role that is not really anything but a Hollywood invention. To me it's like the cutting off a lock of hair of a hero as a keepsake, not realizing he/she is wearing a wig. Although I will agree that in the Newman and McQueen cases, they did dedicate real life experience and were not just playing a role. Although we have no real indication that McQueen had any real affinity for the watches in the first place. However once the Hollywood publicity machine get involved all bets are off. Much like the Russell Crow auctions and in part the Stallone stuff.

Lots of history behind that piece, for sure. This auction had quite the lineup.
Heuer was something special prior to the merger. They've got a few cool watches today, especially the reissue watches reminiscent of the golden era. |
