My GF is Making me Do This!!!

I have begged, cajoled and pleaded with her not to buy a blinged out Rolex online. I have explained, ad naseum the pitfalls, dangers and the likelihood of fakery but she is insistent. So, with that being said, and under extreme protest and embarrassment, here's what she loves. PLEASE help me help her... Thoughts?

I just had the same problem with a buddy of mine and his old lady.

As to your old lady’s watch it looks good to me but I’m curious to see what others with more knowledge say.

Have you shown her any of the current diamond DJ variants? They aren’t as in high demand as the SS variants so can be obtain within a reasonable wait. I personally would buy one that has factory gem setting vs aftermarket. You always risk stones falling out with aftermarket and not to mention the quality of the stones are usually inferior.

x2

My MIL has a couple DJ's (36mm) with diamonds (I have pictures i'll look for of one). They weren't terribly expensive and were purchased from AD's w/ no or little waiting
Edit: found a pic of one of them-

I'd show her some new pieces at an AD and let her see what a proper Rolex with diamonds should look like. Or just show her the responses on TRF!

Showing her the responses is my plan!!!!! She's seen them in the ADs but it's not enough bling lol

I wouldn't bet on that. Some times no matter what you give her, it's not enough, and the more you give them the more they want in most situations. YMHO..

New MSRP for diamond less future resale will be worse than buying an older Franken outright and throwing it away someday. You can get diamond DJ on eBay for $4K.

Something like this:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/MENS-ROLEX-....m46890.l49292

Looks like a blinged out 80s midsize or ladies size... hard to tell from the pics... you may want to steer clear of diamond case lugs since that is the only diamond option on this watch that is not reversible... however... if that is the look your GF wants, she won't find it in the store window, even for new Rolex... the string diamond dial was only available on crown collection models in the 80s and 90s and Rolex doesn't do diamond lugs on Datejust models (yet)... also, this is likely a stock photo so the watch you actually receive will probably have slight differences...

They're not even all of the same watch. Coronet on the crown looks to point in different directions in different pics.

It's jewelry, anything goes.

You cannot get a proper precious metal Pearlmaster with diamond case, bezel, and dial for a price that could come close to a modified SS DJ.

If the price is comfortable, it will be a hit at the Country Club, or even with the Book Club.

Tell her to stay away from the diamond lugs. That devalues the watch since it's a permanent change. If she wants a diamond dial and bezel there's nothing wrong with that and those can be reversed. The factory stuff is many, many times more expensive but better quality. However, not really worth it if you're buying new. Try to find used as they depreciate a lot.

Used factory diamond dials are about $1,000 and up. New around $2,000 to $3,000. Aftermarket they're $200 to $300.

Used factory diamond bezels are fairly hard to find but new I think they're $5,000 and up. Aftermarket anywhere from $700 to $2,000 depending on quality and size.

Also, if she ends up buying one, make sure it includes an original dial and bezel on the side.

+1 on the above.

I'd look for a good used DJ with factory diamond dial. You can add a diamond bezel later if absolutely necessary. Aftermarket diamond lugs are a non-starter, IMO. YMMV.

My wife likes the diamonds on her watches too. If they are factory or aftermarket is really the issue. Factory diamonds look great and some aftermarket really look tacky but are alot less costly. Buy Factory IMHO.

It seems that the fitment of both end pieces is funky if photo angle is not deceiving and might need a jeweler's touch to form correctly if they are legit.

Way too much ice IMO. Ask her if she'll take the carat weight you delete from the watch in a single stone for her finger or neck?? She'll end up with a great watch and a nice diamond setting!

Drive to Manhattan and spend a couple of days shopping in the Diamond District. It’s fun... and she’ll find something perfect for her.

Pro tip. If it makes her happy, it’s worth it’s weight in gold and then some.
