14060 dilemna

Hi all,

Researched a ton and decided on a z series 14060, which I picked up a few hours ago. I loved it at first however the first few comments I have received about the watch were not positive due to the watch's size in relation to my size. Sucks when you are expecting a compliment from a fellow WIS. So I have a problem. I have worn it for a few hours now in and around the house and a couple of my neighbors commented on how small the watch looks on my wrist. I am a larger man (weight-wise and tall) and while I love the history of the watch; their comments have me a bit overly sensitive. I would estimate my wrist size at 7.75 inches.

One of them suggested the GMTIIc as the bezel somehow would wear larger. I'm wondering since they are both 40mm, is this possible - perhaps in the way it sits on the wrist.

So I have a favor to ask (yes, I have used the search feature already!) - could anyone post a pic of the sub ND and GMTIIC side by side for comparison sake? I do remember wearing it and liking it, but the PCL were a deal breaker. Perhaps NATO strap (sorry JJ)??

I would really love to keep my Sub ND, but not at the risk of looking feminine as my friends brutally put it. I feel the history of the watch and the asthetic reasons I opted for it should still trump their opinions, but I can't help but be a bit sensitive to their comments. Its a shame for such a memorable day to be tarnished by such comments, but only friends like these would be brutally honest. I love the Sub ND so much I will be wearing it to sleep tonight! I was thinking perhaps they are used to seeing me wear a PO 45.5 mm on my wrist as the reason they felt it looked a bit off. I would imagine so! I must admit it does feel a bit small, but again, I am going from a PO 45 mm to the Sub ND so that is going to happen. I feel confident I will be comfortable with the 40mm size in no time. It is a heck of a lot more comfortable! Your opinion are valued and welcomed.

I have seen them side by side and the way the bezel and numbers on the bezel of the GMTIIc does make it look bigger than the sub.

anyway, it really takes getting used to. My stand is always wear what I like and hack care the rest :)

I had EXACTLY the same issue as you. I came from PO 45.5mm territory and bought a ND sub. My wrist size is 7.5 inches, so same as you, this spelt disaster. The watch looked tiny and I was properly disappointed.

Having said that, I flipped it for a date sub, which tends to wear larger. The LV I hear, wears even larger.

I'm not sure what it is about the 14060M, but they do tend to wear slightly smaller (I know they are smaller by 0.5mm, but this shouldn't be noticeable). My guess is the lack of SEL and its relative slimness both contribute to that compared to the other 40mm sports models.

I would recommend that you wear the watch for at least 2-3 weeks to get used to the size on your arm and hide the PO. Once that settles in, you will be surprised at how natural 40mm looks on your wrist and the PO will look like a monster when you try and wear it next time. Not to mention that as far as comfort goes, there is no beating the 14060M! Even better than the 16610 in that respect IMHO.

Snap out of it man. How many of these guys have Rolex watches anyway? Can you say "Haters"? When I put my Sub Date on, I don't look like Sean Connery, But I wear the watch because I like a Sub, not how it makes me look.

Vince my man, if you like the watch then tell your "friends" to buy their own of theit chosing and leave you alone.

The GMT IIc does wear bigger because of the maxi case and it is a little wider where the lugs meet the case but there's not much in it. My wrist is 7.5" for comparison.

Man, if I had "friends" like that - I'd replace the friends instead of the Rolex.
They sound like absolute jerks. How does a Rolex Submariner look feminine? Unless your wearing a skirt and high heels, there's no way!

I have a Sub ND and it's cool - understated and classic - looks good no matter what you wear or the occasion. Truly a man's watch.

Wear it in good health and tell your green-eyed friends to take a hike!

Badly redialed in the 70s...very small...but it's a friggen watch! I love it because it was my favorite uncle's pride and joy, and it was my first genuine keeper.

Wear your watch for awhile. Forget it. Use it to tell time. Let it settle in.

And find a better class of friends.

Sounds like watch envy to me. My "friends" would be happy for me, not saying that a watch looks bad...sounds like an etiquette class in in order.

Vince, why worry about the others. The issue here is DO YOU LIKE THE WATCH. If you do, then don't give a rat's tail for what others think

Any watch will look good, it depends on what your self confidence level is.

This is so strange as this happened to me as well...I went from a Seamaster though that is 42mm and when I wore the 14060 the first few times it looked small. My 13 yr old daughter even remarked about it. I even had bizarre thoughts that I received the only 36mm 14060 in existance! THAT ALL BEING SAID, and others have said, after wearing it for a few weeks it became very natural looking to me. The clean lines and traditional look overwhelmed any feeling of it being slight or small. GIVE IT TIME and I promise you will be more than delighted.

I moved from a 50mm u-boat to a gmt II, which felt rather small. I have 6.5 inch wrist and now I love the 40mm. 14060M is next and cant wait to wear it on nato.

After sleeping on it, I've made the decision to keep the watch and screw their opinions. I personally love it and am not normally swayed by other's opinions. Some of the criticisms are accurate - i had just bought the watch a few hours before posting this question. First rolex, was expecting different feedback from these friends / neighbors. I assumed that if anyone even noticed a Sub ND, especially a watch lover or WIS, I would at least have a compliment or some respect for the history of the watch and the place it deserves in a watch collection. I expected that if anyone even noticed this relatively low flying watch a conversation about its place in watch collecting history would ensue and I was prepared for that discussion. This is 50% of the reason I bought the watch - its heritage! Aesthetics being the other half.

It is definitely the cleanest and most comfortable watch I've been privileged to own. I am confident the size thing will be fine in a week or so. I am comfortable with change. As far as the friends and neighbors go - How sad. They've been dropped and my guard is up. Didn't see that one coming. Just wanting to share a moment in my life with some buddies!

Good for you. This is a icon of a watch. And i agree it dose sound like watch envy. Because to be honest i have never seen a sub that looks to small on a wrist ever.. And i have seen them on some pretty big guys.

Vince, Welcome to the Forum and your purchase of an iconic watch. I know you asked your neighbors for their opinions and didn't hear what you wanted to hear. But Who did you buy the watch for YOU or for OP's opinions. I happen to own a 14060m and love it for the classic look and do not care what others think. I believe you made a good decision now go ahead and wear it and enjoy your new Rolex!!!

Ok, I know that fashions change, people are different, opinions must be respected, and there are no absolutes....BUT a sub is NOT too small or too feminine on anyone, anytime, anyplace, anywhere. To suggest that a 40mm watch is too small is really just silly. Unless you are 15 feet tall, I really would not worry about it. I have never seen a person of any size sporting a sub and thought---"wow that watch is way too small and girly for him, he should really try something with more heft like a Seth Thomas wall clock...." Heck Tom Selleck did not look silly wearing a GMT on Magnum PI, and he's like 9 feet tall :)
