Use my hype piece to trade up?

Got my DD Anniversary (RG DD w olive dial) a few months ago at retail and it’s a sick piece. I really do like it but yes, it’s a hype piece. I’ve acquired another DD since, a YG with champagne dial classic so I do have two DD’s. Curious what your opinions are on using the RG DD Anniversary to trade up into a Platinum Day Date, plus a little cash. I’m into the RG DD $42k, I could get $58k for it at David’s and turn around and purchase the platinum DD for $63k. Thanks in advance.

These decisions are always personal so ultimately it’s what you like.
That being said, I would do that deal. The YG champagne DD is iconic. It’s really the flagship Rolex. The RG olive never did it for me. The platinum DD is definitely special. I say go for it.

It’s a good deal based on monetary value, but the Platinum DD never did it for me. I love the fluted bezel and I think the extra weight on the platinum DD will eventually get annoying. I’ve had heavy watches in the past, and after the honeymoon period, I tend not to wear them.

I would not. A DD needs a fluted bezel imho

Depends whether you want to keep wearing other watches too.

A smooth bezel platinum DD with the ice blue dial will make the rest of your collection redundant. You'll never wear anything else.

I tend to agree as long as it suits the wearer.
A watch like that tends to virtually be the equivalent of a knockout bid.

You know, this is a very interesting point and I’ve slowly come around to this way of thinking.

One other thing to consider: The one DSW is listing has the old bare metal seconds hand, not the newer blue painted one. Not sure whether that matters to the OP, but worth noting.

Just double checked the Rolex website. It appears the painted blue hands are now out of production and only the steel hands, across all blue dials. Thanks for bringing to my attention though for sure.

I agree when the platinum 40mm w/smooth bezel is the reference point. However, back when the DD36 was available with an Oyster bracelet, the domed bezel worked quite well for a "modern" rendition of one of the most classic watches of all times.

I dont think you'll get anywhere near $58k tbh.

Also David is listing it at $59,875 that is new unworn. Used ones I saw one sell for $54.5k yesterday on a chat group I'm part of dated 2021 as well but used mint.

They will work on 10%+ maybe even 15% margin. So if they get it for $50k + 10% or so they will try to sell it for $55k for used. Maybe a little less as market is not that hot at the moment. Stock sitting a while.

I really don't know where to go with this

personally, i would be focused solely on what colour metal on your watches best suits your skin tone.
For me, I know the Platinum with a subtle Ice blue design would be best but very closely followed by the Rose gold with Olive dial. The Yellow gold wouldn't even get a look in with my complexion.
If I were after a watch to wear then I would probably only go for the Platinum and forget the rest

For $5 thousand I’d definitely trade “hype” for “anti-hype” - I like people to think I am wearing a $6k Datejust

Definitely keep the RG DD olive it’s the best I’ve seen the dial is gorgeous, sell the YG DD save till you have the extra money and then get the Platinum, then you’ve got what you really want best of both worlds good luck

Personally prefer the anniversary DD to the Platinum, so would not do it myself. But only you can decide. On principle, I even agree with you, but I would not trade up into that particular piece. Would go for something more refined like a Lange or Patek at that price level.

+1. Looks like you've bought watches before. Not sure why you think their list price is what you get for trade in value...The delta between the two is laughable these days.

Yeah, gotta agree with these guys. However, even with the adjusted numbers, it still puts a grail-level piece within reach. If that's where your head (and heart) is at, then go for it.

But, I can tell you from experience, this watch stuff is funny business. Make sure you know what it is you really want and are not just chasing the hype train. My two cents.

I would in your shoes. IMO the YG DD > RG DD. I’d trade up but I would get something different, not a Pt DD. Maybe even leverage into a different brand?

The thing is you're into the RG DD. So it should be a good deal for you to take considering you'll be satisfied afterwards.
