First visit NYC Diamond District
Miserable experience! Seen so many YouTube videos of people coming out here and buying, selling flipping. Incredible selection! Lot of heavy hitters in windows - more so than that of LA’s jewelry district which I visit often. I had my 16570 on, wasn’t trying to sell it but hey if someone offered a good price I would trade into something else. A couple of people roped me into their stores and tried to buy my watch… asking annoying questions like “how much did you pay for your watch” refusing to quote me unless I told them…. Craziness.
Holy hell! People out here are rude, super pushy and all around it just wasn’t what I imagined. Glad I came and experienced it. But wow, that was something else hahaha Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

In general the places that sell only or mostly watches are more engaging than the diamonds/gold/watches guys. New Yorkers are definitely direct though.

FWIW, the high quality dealers are generally not on ground level and require appointments.

They are sharks looking to prey on you. There are a few good ones there, but they are greatly outnumbered.

I worked in Manhattan for years, never really explored that district closely, but that is what I would expect.

I was going to add a comment, but the comments above pretty much covered it. 47th St can be like the Wild West.

I used to work in a Pawn Shop. I know. It’s a scummy environment. If someone wanted to sell something, you always try your hardest to get them to say the first price. The buyer desperately wants them to lowball themselves. If you’re paying a fair price based on market value, then what the potential customer paid for his watch should be irrelevant. |

Ha! One of my favorite streets to walk through whenever the opportunity presents itself. You just need to push through the noise and interact only when *you* choose to. Edit: don’t know why I quoted the above. Was meant to be a reply to the general thread. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Love the place! You can open and close a deal in less than a minute. No nonsense, know what you want. Watches, jewelry, had 'em resize wife's ring in a few minutes.... another place did a quick fix/rebuild on my wife's vintage DJ36 Jubilee bracelet.
But yeah, it can be 'not tourist friendly'.

Definitely a no "chit chat" environment.
See watch. How much? Agree or counter... Walk away or buy immediately..then get out. |

That’s why you go to NY it’s an experience, the people the food the shopping. When shopping diamond district you need to do your homework beforehand know what you and know what the market prices are. Otherwise you’re raw red meat in the shark tank

I don't know about watches, but you can't get better diamond prices anywhere. Maybe that market is a little more rationalized with the internet now but it was a no brainer in the past.
And for sure, these guys are a lot more aggressive than you'll find in a Rolex AD jewelry store. By like a factor of 10. There is no romancing, small talk or the vaunted "relationship building" that some people believe gets them something. |

I am from Georgia where we take things nice and what some would call a slow pace and I was a tourist in NYC last year.
I like to say the people were very "intentional" in their walking, talking and just about everything else Ironically, after a couple of days, I found myself getting upset with other tourists who hadn't caught on yet. I had the hardest time on the trains, getting on the right side of the station for my intended route, but that is another story, lol |

If you get the best price for an item elsewhere-be it watch, coin, diamond, etc. and go there to try and beat it you can make out well, otherwise you are chum for the sharks.
For instance if I was selling 3 1 ounce Gold Eagles I would get the best price possible from local stores and national outlets like JM Bullion and Apmex. Then you can go to 47th and demand a price a tiny bit more. If you get it fine-if not you walk away. My guess is, even though you may do your homework you will get back a little under the best price. But keep in mind they pay in CASH with no paper trail and that makes a ton of difference to a ton of people. |

This sounds like a typical 47th street day.

I love that place, yes there are some street hassle but there are also many respected dealer. You don't go there to have a treat, you go when you know what you're looking for and know the prices.
Remember that they are mostly wholesales, the first time I went there I told a dealer I was interested in a Daytona, the answer was: "How many"?? |

Honestly New Yorkers are not mean/rude. We just dispense with unnecessary pleasantries and tend to get to the point. We also just don’t abide throngs of tourists monopolizing sidewalks, or stopping in the middle of a walkway, or blocking an escalator, etc. To us, that behavior displays self-centeredness and disregard for others.
I say this as someone who didn’t grow up in NYC. |

yeh 47th st. isn't a pleasant environment for tourists, let alone new yorkers looking to window shop... you gotta just know where you wanna go, and B line there, don't be afraid to give back the attitude thrown at you, no one takes it personally, it's just the vibe...

The street is wonderful: Any watch you want can be obtained for the right price in a short time.
Just look in the windows to see all the watches not seen at a dealer. The merchants have encyclopedic knowledge of watches. Much better than the usual dealer. |
