Choosing between a Pepsi or a Fat Lady - same price
Totally new member here but been lurking for many years. I recently came upon an opportunity to purchase another Rolex (I already have a few) and I cannot decide:
(1) GMT Master II (16710) "Pepsi", year 2000 It is in excellent condition with Oyster bracelet. The bezel is in very good condition with no fading. I know the market has a preference for the Pepsi and Rolex updated it with the ceramic bezel. I do like the Red+Blue bezel as it is unique and attractive. I also like the Luminecse dials. The con here is that the 16710 Pepsi are easier to find than the Fat Lady. Also, assuming my AD gives me an allocation, I can hopefully get a ceramic bezel new one in may three years? (LOL) (2) GMT Master II (16760) "Fat Lady" or "Sophia Loren", year 1987 It is in excellent condition with oyster bracelet. Bezel is in very good condition. This watch is harder to find than the Pepsi since it was produced only for about 3 years. I see prices of these higher than Pepsis even in OK (not excellent) condition. I find this watch quite interesting because of its unique background and history of being the first GMT Master II. I also like the sightly larger size, but I probably won't even notice that since I already own a Submariner. The con is that it has the Triptium dials (which is probably irrelevant). So BOTH watches are being sold by my AD and priced EXACTLY THE SAME. I cannot make up my mind but I have a preference. My wife also has a preference. I will try to post some pics if I can. What would you guys get and why? Thanks. |

Choosing between a Pepsi or a Fat Lady - same price
That 16760 reference is special and would be my choice personally.

16760, but condition should be your main consideration.

Both are great watches and it comes down to the watch that is more appealing to you. If you can only have 1 gmt, I'd recommend the 16710 because you change the bezels to whatever combo suits you. Coke, Pepsi, or all black were all available with the 16710. I don't believe they were available for the fat lady.

Sounds like you want a 16760. If either had box and papers thats a plus.

However, the 16760 never came in anything except the red/black insert - it was the original "birth" color and watch for the GMT II. Putting in a different insert would be blasphemous. I would have gone with the original GMT II, the 16760, but there was no wrong choice here.

You appear to like fat lady better on your wrist, so case closed.
Don’t get caught up in “investment” hype, neither of these watches will make you rich in future. That being said, the 16710 is amazing for its versatility, which Rolex will never make again. |

If they only made the Fat Lady with the Pepsi bezel then the decision would be much simpler. |

I'd never heard of a "fat lady". I still don't know what that's got to do with Ms. Loren, as she was not and still is not fat, AFAIK.
It really doesn't matter what any of us think. You have a preference, buy that one.

I prefer the 16710 just for the looks. And if it's also in better condition that would settle it for me. I also prefer both choices to the ceramic models.

I personally favor the 16710 because of the thinner case and 3185 movement. Mine is a P-serial 2000 model and gets 95% of my wrist time.

Does either piece come as a full set? This might sway my decision. Has either piece been serviced recently? It would be one less thing you have to worry about after purchasing it. How about current timekeeping accuracy of both? These considerations aside, I think you have to go with he one that you are the most passionate about. Hopefully you can post some pics soon!

Personally, I would choose the 16710 for the thinner case.

On my side I would vote for the 16760.
- much rarer - very comfortable to wear - tritium - introduicing 5 Innovations: 1. The Rolex ref. 16760 was the first GMT-Master II 2. The GMT-Master II 16760 debuted the “Coke” bezel 3. The Rolex ref. 16760 was the first GMT-Master to use sapphire crystal 4. The Rolex ref. 16760 was the first GMT-Master to use white gold on the dial 5. The Rolex ref. 16760 was the first GMT-Master to have an independent center hour hand I've got one and love it :)) |

I have the 16710, so I'm biased. BUT, if the 16760 is in great condition I'd opt for that.
