Black widow

So the rumors are true and I am still very surprised this happened to me. I live in Massachusetts and went grocery shopping this morning. Went into the the bag to grab the bananas and I was staring down at a black widow spider. So far this has been the craziest thing to happen to me from a simple grocery store visit lol.

Just happy I didn’t randomly get a bite as I’m sure I would’ve been fine but probably wouldn’t have been the most fun.
Also happy my kids weren’t helping me get the groceries out of the bag today.

I’m in Alberta (different part of “here” I guess)
We have lots of black widows in the south part of the province….and scorpions, rattlesnakes and horned roads!

This doesn’t happen when I make fries or onion rings.

We have big ones in Las Vegas. I think they occur naturally in the southwest. I leave them be when I find them around the yard because the last time I exterminated them I got a scorpion invasion instead.

I’d rather have black widows that are typically shy of humans than yellow scorpions that aren’t and don’t stop stinging!

Wow! You all would have heard me from hundreds of miles away if I found one of those in my food. You are very lucky.

My in laws lived in the Palm Springs area for over a decade, and they’d find some of those hanging out in rocks that were near the swimming pool. I think the brown recluse is the worst spider I’ve seen locally.

That’s crazy! Glad you didn’t get bit. Here’s one on my front stairs. She was about 1.5-2” leg to leg. Biggest I’ve ever seen.

But then again, we regularly get the hairy tarantulas strolling into our garage

Must be organic bananas...... a bit of spray would have taken care of it.

Black Widow spiders are a way of life around here, you never stick your hands into dark corners.

I would have tossed that bag off the nearest cliff or, short of that, onto the side of the road. Had a finger swell like a balloon from a spider bite once. Not sure if can kill a grown man but can certainly kill a pet or a child.

Wow! I've heard the stories of how black widows loved to live in outhouses back in the day.

Wow, I found a few spiders in my days in grapes purchased from the supermarket, Never a black widow though. Crazy!

So gross. I hate spiders. I got bitten on the forehead while sleeping one spring night in 2019. I remember brushing something off my forehead during the night and the next morning I had these two strange little bumps that looked like pimples. Huge mistake - I sort of poked them while trying to figure out what they might be. That must have pushed the venom deeper into my skin because the whole area swelled up to the size of an egg. I took Benedryl and ibuprofen, iced it, applied Benedryl cream to the area and it still lasted that way for a week. I still have a small scar and blemish from it and up close in the right light you can see the two fang puncture marks.
