My Explorer II makes a sort of fast, ticking sound when manually wound, so if that's the kind of sound you describe your Sub seems normal.

It's the sound of your watch saying 'wear me! wear me!'.

I have a K series Sub Date and recently had the "five year" service done. Before the service the winding sound/feel was somewhat like a "buzz" not unlike that made when winding a small child’s toy. After the service it now has a completely different sound/feel, more like a smoother "springy" click.

Also the date changes much more quietly now, On the infrequent occasions when still awake at midnight I used to hear, even w/the TV on very low, a distinct click –almost like a bb falling on the floor- marking the date change. Now it is a barely audible, whisper like, flick.

New parts? Needed oiling? Combination of the two?

Not complaining, just observations. One thing is for sure, before the service it ran +8 per day, now just under +1 so I'm very pleased with that!!

I think this goes with the other question you asked regarding having your watch serviced. If you are experiencing an unevenness in the winding, it's time.
