What is the point of owning an ROLEX GMT if you cannot wear it when Travel?

I'm living in an Southeast Asian country, and although many think my country is not safe, actually we can wear the expensive watch on the street and don't worry much about getting thief.

But when travel to other countries , the story is completely different.

I don't know about the U.S, But when someone who have beautiful watches travel to European , especially some of the biggest City there like London, Paris, Madrid, Milan... People always say don't wear nice watches on the street... Because the thief always there waiting for expensive watches.

I mean those countries are the most developed in the world, not some place like India, Iraq... And still cannot stop the thief? Can someone who live in those countries confirm if those warning is true or not?

Maybe Rolex should invent some anti-thief Bracelet? because their watches is so popular/eyes-catching that can be seen by thief from far distance?

An anti-theft bracelet would force the criminal to use a machete to hack your hand off to get your watch. Not a good idea.

yes, criminals chop off your wrists/ hands for $200 watches/ goods in bad neighbourhoods in SE Asia, S America, Africa.
People got stabbed disputing 50ct parking fees in my hometown, all the time :(
I'm from SE Asia, trust me (....as Eddie Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop)

I don't think so, watch robberies at street nowadays are at the lowest priority among criminal cases in the police department. because no bodies get hurt and losing a rolex won't hurt too much to rich people. but chopping one's hand off would definitely raise the priority to the highest level, and those robbers definitely don't want that!

Nobody get hurt? Are you kidding me? People are getting beaten, stabbed and even sometimes killed for their luxury watch. Open your eyes!

Didn’t a guy and his partner just get pistol whipped in LA not so long ago? For his watch?

I mean, there are terrible stories about doing anything, anywhere. If you just focus on whatever sensational story is reported, you’d never leave your house.

I don't think cops care.

Look at crime stats for the formerly-great city of Chicago. It's not about Rolex envy...

Cops aren't the issue. District attornys are the problem. They don't prosecute and judges let people walk without bail.

India is pretty developed, mate. And quite safe to wear your GMT and other watches in public as long as you are sensible about it.

It’s a country of a billion plus people. Like any other large city anywhere in the world, there will be dodgy pockets, which are avoidable.

You don’t really hear of any violent crime surrounding watch thefts or someone hacking off your arm to steal your gold Rolex.

Conflating ‘is it safe’ in general terms with ‘is it safe to wear and be an ignorant peacock flaunting being rude bringing attention to oneself wearing prestige brand accessories that identify with wealth in areas where the GDP per capita is the watch value and not taking a second to occasionally see what’s around you’ are not the same thing.

I think it's blown well out of proportion with the news articles that are shared on here, TBH. Sure, you will have a couple instances where people get robbed, but does that mean I'm not going to carry a wallet because there were 5 occurrences of pickpockets over the last month over millions of people? Hardly.

Just insure it, don't flaunt it, and you should be okay to enjoy what you wear anywhere in the world.

The safe didn‘t help ArchieLuxury

With all of these anguished stories of thefts, it seems like a lot of people don‘t insure their nice watches. Why is that?

We hear all the time here on TRF: "If you can't afford to lose 10/20/30/40/50k then you shouldn't be buying a luxury watch. This is my play money, I don't care what watch values are doing." I guess they put their money where their mouth is

Millions of people wear Rolex watches every day in most all countries on this planet a very tiny proportion get any problems. But today if any thefts and its any high end brand then over exaggerated and reported by the media.

Isn't because of the Media/Rolex Scarcity, the thefts know more about what they should "looking" for?

The USA is very safe, in general. But let's consider the city of Los Angeles.
1) You land at the airport (safe)
2) Take an uber to your hotel (safe) [Select hotel in a clean part of town]
3) Walk to a nearby mall (safe)
4) Eat dinner at a nearby restaurant (safe)
5) Next day go to Disneyland, or Queen Mary, a museum (safe)

However, there are many places that are not safe whether you wear a Rolex or not.

LA crime map. Stay away from the high crime places and there's no issue. Follow the same advice with any large city.
https://products.xtown.la/map

And of course neighboring Orange County is safer still - don't even need to stay "in" LA itself.

Exactly. USA is extremely safe in about 99% of the country.

Like you said, there are some exceptions.

I hate to pick on the Kensington section of Philadelphia, but that’s 1 example where I’d never wear a Rolex. Detroit, Chicago, LA and all large urban areas have similar sections that you should avoid.

Great post and all true with one addition from me...

Watch out for a Tommy's chiliburger - delicious but will give you (almost instant) gas...then again, maybe a better warning for your traveling companions..

Good luck with it!

Your post is crazy close to the one and only time I was in LA. Stayed on property at Disneyland and went down to Hollywood and walked around, had lunch, caught a movie at the Cinerama Dome and then the next morning took Uber out to the Queen Mary while waiting for the rest of my party to arrive so we could actually do Disneyland. Never felt unsafe at all, though admittedly this was in the fall before Covid.

Not sure how it's degraded now.

I'm driving down to Disneyworld in a few weeks and planning on taking a Rolex with me but it will be secure in the trunk during the driving portion. Planning on wearing a Vostok Amphibia on travel days.
