DateJust (36 fluted) flashiness versus larger sports models

Does anyone share my experience that a smaller DateJust seems to attract more attention than larger sports models?

Over the course of one month since I got the DateJust 36 (Fluted, Blue, Jubilee, 126234) I have received several comments on it, including from strangers.

I wear the watch for myself, love its size and features, but don't want to attract any attention. The thing is, I have worn Rolex/Tudor sports models (Milgauss, GMT, BlackBay) for 15+ years those never seemed to attract this kind of attention.

I am asking this because now, because it's still winter (long sleeve weather), but when spring/summer comes one may expect this unexpected effect to grow.

While I don't mind much what others think, I wonder if this "effect" is a proxy for theft risk? Anyone know someone who got robbed for a "mere" DateJust 36?

(included some photos to give you an idea about the watches)

In the 6-7 years that I’ve been wearing Rolex watches I’ve only ever had 2 comments. 1 was a compliment on my BLNR years ago and the other was someone asking last week if it was a Rolex I had on when I was wearing my 36 DJ (fluted, blue dial).

Take from that, that most people don’t care what you wear. It’s mostly only us WIS who pay attention to such things.

Like you I wear for myself so couldn’t care less re others comments

I would add that a lot of people just don't compliment or say anything most of the time. I personally don't say anything unless it's someone I'm close to or something really, really special.

Fluted bezel and jubilee = quintessential Rolex. It’s not surprising that people notice the sparkle and also know it’s a Rolex. Up to you if that’s an issue.

This. Fluted/jubilee far from subtle.

I have a 126200 on oyster and 126234 on jubilee. People never notice the 126200, but almost everyone recognise the latter mostly because of the jubilee. I don't really care about that, but if you want to go unnoticed, you should not wear the jubilee.

Well, it is very difficult to answer this question given the many variables involved. Where you live, what other clothes you wear, who you are, and so on. Generally, the "sparkliest" the watch the more attention it becomes I'd say.

Thank you all for sharing your insights.

Most stories about theft and robberies I know involve sports models or pieces in PM. Anybody know about the likelihood of the DJ36 becoming a target?

For some more context:
I spend 50% of my time in Amsterdam, 50% on the country side (where crime is rarer).
I wear normal casual clothes, jeans, T-shirts and polo shirts. I am rarely (openly) drunk or incapacitated. I always tend to keep an eye on things around me. I would call it "normal street wise". I do use public transport now and then (train / metro).

Seems like your enjoyment of the watch will be limited because of your concerns; would just get it insured and wear it or else just change it to a less flashy option (smooth bezel model, swap bracelet to oyster)

I think I’ve only had a few comments over the years on a watch I was wearing, and it wasn’t a Rolex

Something else to consider: You've had the watch for a month, you're still enamored with it, so you're probably checking it out yourself more often and with more excitement compared to the watches you've had for years. Likely subconsciously. But that's what people are taking notice of, leading them to then notice the watch itself and compliment it accordingly.

The DJ is the classic Rolex and jubilee does have a reflection that can be seen across the room. Don't go to Barcelona with that watch.

Wear an explorer and you'll be completely ignored.

Beautiful watch. Got a 126300 two weeks ago and got a compliment from the clerk at a local store. I’m assuming since I received change with my watch hand and she saw. I have it insured live in the Midwest and feel comfortable wearing it. If that were to ever change I would just sell it. I wear my watches for myself and if it gets to the point it’s to dangerous then they will be parted with. Enjoy that new watch I think you will be alright.

Other than light hearted comments from friends, Ive only had three for four comments in almost thirty years of wearing Rolex watches, so I dont see it as a big deal.

To answer your question: No. I don't know anyone personally that got robbed of their datejust 36, or any other watch for that matter. And I personally wouldn't worry about it. In my superficial opinion, if you're going to worry about being a crime victim, you should worry about being the victim of a cyber crime.

I can’t recall any comment from a stranger while out in public; that’s not to say people don’t notice.

In your case, that happens to be a super iteration of the DateJust, so nice that people are inclined to compliment. Don’t worry about it.

I personally agree with this. I get more comments on my fluted datejust than my sport models... and the attention seems to come from non-watch people...and my sports models get more comments from people in the hobby.

Just my anecdotal experience. Like others said... the fluted dj is very recognizable as Rolex.

I actually came to this same conclusion myself.... "interesting my fluted dj gets more comments than my other pieces.."

I can relate to your post. I have Rolex, Tudor, Tag, Hamilton, and Ball watch in my collection. I have had my Date Just 41 fluted/oyster two tone yellow gold black dial for 3 years. Not one compliment or mention. Neither with my 2018 Air King. I have had my Date Just 36 fluted/jubilee SS with blue fluted dial for 6 months and have had 3 comments on it. Smaller watch, but is it more eye catching than the 41? Both with fluted bezel, but different bracelet. However, the oyster bracelet os two tone so I don’t know.

As a note, the watch in my collection that gets most comments is my Tag Heuer Carerra chronograph.

The Jubilee bracelet and fluted bezel certainly do add a bit of flashiness to it. As Cru Jones had mentioned, both of those features are quintessential Rolex. Even non-watch people will sometimes see that instantly know it's a Rolex. As far as getting robbed....sure, any high end watch or piece of jewelry makes a person a higher target than without. Thieves are looking for these kinds of items though, and they will rob whether you're wearing a Black Bay or Rolex on Oyster bracelet.

Even Rolex knows that this is the watch that the world considers to be “Rolex.” No one commented on your GMT, or other peoples Daytonas etc because they simply had no idea they were a Rolex.

The jubilee and fluted reflect light very differently than smooth and Oyster bracelet. That is noticeable.

People tend to comment on my Tudor watches more than my Rolex watches.

And most of those are Apple Store Geniuses

Again, thank you all for sharing! I feel totally comfortable to continue wearing it - but I thought it would be a good idea to tap into the "collective TRF experience". It's my first new DateJust and therefore I simply didn't know if this was normal (or extra dangerous). I get it that normal (/ non WIS) recognise it easier.

Cheers to you all and enjoy your pieces in good health and fortune!
