Wearing bluesy to work

Hi all,

I am an engineer and work in a tech company where everybody dresses very casual and go with smart watches or cheap quartz watches. I really love my bluesy and wore it a couple or times to work but felt like people are noticing and looking at it. Not that it makes me very uncomfortable but considering I'm one of the lower ranked engineers and almost all my colleagues and managers wear sub $1k watches, would it be a good choice to wear to work? I really like to have a rolex as my daily wearer and I really love my bluesy. Should I wait until my AD calls me to pick up a less flashy datejust one day or it would be fine wearing the flashy bluesy? What's your take on this? How is this perceived in such work culture? I am new to the job and the industry, also new to the US job market, so I'm seeking your opinion on the work culture and how wearing a flashy bluesy by a lower ranked newcomer engineer is percieved?

Wear the Bluesy.

I work in a similar environment - US bank IT dept. - and most colleagues wear cheap smart watches or none at all. I like to think of my watch as the last bastion of mechanical wonder in a world of prevalent technology. I wear it proudly around the office. Never heard a negative comment, although I wouldn't care much TBH.

Wearing bluesy to work

I was a Technology Executive for a large financial services company before I retired. At one point, I had a peak of 483 people reporting up through me. So I have some relevant experience in the corporate world.

If you’re popular and well-liked, nobody cares about the watch you’re wearing. Honestly, I wouldn’t worry about it at all. I wore Rolex watches all the time and never gave a crap about what people thought.

One other thing, if I knew someone didn’t like my watch, that would be an incentive for me to wear it even more. lol. But that’s me…In my case, I always felt as if I was the one making up all the rules…

Put it this way: If your colleagues and managers all drove cars that were $80,000, would you feel strange driving a car that was $50,000?

Just because your colleagues aren't spending money on mechanical watches, doesn't mean they're not spending their money on other things that you might find frivolous.

Agreed. You love in a free country and you didn’t steal the watch. You have no reason to feel uncomfortable.

Someone buying a car rarely sees any appreciation unless it is a rare, super expensive car that is not driven. Your Folex is much more sensible as a “frivilous” purchase if you ever feel compelled to even discuss it.

I don't think they're actually noticing. If anything, they're going, "urgh, why would he buy a fancy looking watch like that and not just get an Apple Watch instead!".

No one but gold-diggers, thieves and watch-folks really notices anything that isn't absurdly ostentatious.

Lots of great points in this thread.

It’s just a watch. People are way more concerned with their own lives, jobs, problems, promotions, etc. than with what watch we are wearing. I have my blusey on today. Office setting. Corporate. All types of people, from hourly to CEO. I don’t wear my yellow gold Rolex at work. But I wear TT and other brands like AP, Patek, etc.

Enjoy your watch. Don’t overthink it.

if they know, they would appreciate the fine watch.

but if they don't, they would think it's a $200 watch with a blue face

This! No one notices. If they do, they are into watches, and you will have someone to talk to, about your shared hobby. Win win!

Rotate the Bluesy with some $100/or$50 watches, and with a geeky looking "smart" watch with blood pressure and number of steps per day. They'll embrace you like family.

99% of people don’t notice watches or what watch your wearing. The remaining 1% are either WIS’rs, watch friendly/curious, or thieves.

Wear it and enjoy it in good health.

Shout this from the rooftops!

I was very conscious about wearing my Smurf out when I first got it. Always kept it tucked under a sleeve. Felt like "my secret." Never saw a single civilian (non WIS) even glance at it.

The biggest reaction I got was walking into a Rolex AD & the SA saying "WHOA A SMURF! I haven't seen one of those in a while!" before the door even finished closing.

While your coworkers are going to work in their $1,000/mo leased luxury cars, you can have the last laugh with your Submariner because you spent your money better!

I'm an Engineer for a Med Device company. I rotate between 10 different watches 4 of them are Rolex (BLNR, Sub, Explorer, Daytona). Never had an issue wearing any watch. I don't really care either way what people say...

Any Submariner feels at home in a casual work environment, perhaps even more so compared to your alternative DJ

If one of my analysts at work wears a Patek, IDGAF. It’s up to them how they want to spend their salary / bonus.

I'd like to run across someone wearing a Patek or AP in the wild but never have. Rolex and Apple watches are by far the most recognizable watches in my office. Everyone else is in generic fashion watches it seems.

As you're clearly a thoughtful individual, and as this is even a question for you: don't wear your bluesy to work. At least not for a while. You mention you're new to the industry. Take a year or two to see what others are wearing. If no one's wearing such a classy piece, then don't wear the bluesy, but if you see a good selection wearing nice watches, then re-consider.

Wear it. I always wear short sleeves and rock a big ol' steel and gold Sea-Dweller in the office.

Everybody has something they'll spend money on that other people won't. I got plenty of colleagues with $80k pickup trucks and several with mid-engine Corvettes. So what if I wear a watch that costs only as much as a used Honda Civic and they're wearing Apple Watches or G-shocks?
