What does your watch say about you?

Hi all.

I've got an Explorer II, and like to consider myself a bit of an Explorer too!

I love to travel, see new places, and was thinking the other day that i've definately wound up with the right watch, as it's how i like to see myself living my life, if only on a pretty small scale compared with climbing Mt. Everest!

What, if anything does your watch say about you?

Heck, most of mine just say I'm old.

Generally, I think we do tend to acquire watches that address a certain life style. I've always prefered "sports" watches that can go anywhere and not worry about their functioning.
I suppose there's also a little Walter Mitty in all of us too.
We can't all drive an Aston Martin, but there is that sub...

Good thread. I have a SS Sub (16610) and it seems to sum me up perfectly. From April to October, I'm in the ocean. Either surfing, swimming, diving or just playing around on the boat. I usually dress pretty casual, but my sub fits in nicely on those days I'm wearing a suit too.

Let's see. I have a Sub and can barely swim. I have a YM and don't sail or have a boat. But I do have a Daytona and have raced cars (Vipers and Vettes) so I guess that counts.

With my SS Sub-date, I feel on top of the world!! I do swim, but NEVER with the watch on....and yet, I've always thought this to be the quintessential and ultimate Rolex.

What does it say about me? Well, it's certainly branded me as the "Rolex man" with all my friends and colleagues (especially at work!). Other than that, every morning when I strap it onto my wrist, I can feel some kinda inner glow and strength that is very hard to describe.

I don't think I would get this SAME feeling with any other brand out there.

Mine say that I like diversity. I have my GMT, Glycine and Breitling for a sportier, more casual life, my DD, DJs and JLC for a dressier style, and my Omega X-33 for my exercise program.

Does that mean I'm schizophrenic or merely eccentric?

Interesting question. I don't have a Rolex in my collection now, but I am intending to buy a Sea Dweller as soon as I can. What does it mean to me? Quality, reliability, and focused design values. Projecting into the future, what statement will I think I am making? Well, I have to guess obviously, but I think it means I am a serious person, substantial psychologically, maybe even a slight hint of power.

I think that different brands will mean different things to me. For example, I have tried on PP and VC a few times and am very interested in VC. When I tried them on I felt a sort of connection to craftsmanship and history that I haven't felt with any other brands, at least not as strongly. Isn't it interesting how we can all attach different senses of what a brand means to us on an individual basis or even what it means socially? Rolex more than any other watch brand says luxury to most people, in part because they don't know any other brands. But some people immediate interpret someone wearing a Rolex as "bragging" about how they are doing better economically than others. But each of us has his own reason for buying.

hmmm....i have a 16610 and i have swam with it but have never dived...i plan to this winter when i go down south. I always find it funny when people think that a rolex is a way of bragging. im a 23 year old ambulance worker and am not doing amazingly financially. i have a rolex because of what it means to me. I have craved a rolex since high school. it spoke to me. its not a symbol of my overall financial situation. I have seikos for that lol. My rolex is a realization of a dream. Its a symbol that i can have what i want if i work for it hard enough. Im reminded of this every time i have an inkling to check the time.

Well I am not quite a Rolex owner yet but will be in 24hrs!!! I'd say the brand name has drawn me to it at first but then once I started looking at the watches in the AD etc the craftmanship and the superb look of the watch is what sucked me in. They have a real presence. As for my choice in a Pepsi GMT.. well the Pepsi was what really grabbed me and the ability to change bezels is a great way of having 3 watches in one!

I hope the watch doesnt attract too much 'is that real' or 'you earn too much money' kinda thing... thats not what I want at all, I just fell in love with the style of the watch. My next watch will be a Panerai for sure.... might take me 18mths to get one but hey, half the fun is in the hunt and the planning right?

Well, I stand 6'6" so a Panerai compliments my stature nicely. It's a no-nonsense watch, much like I'm a no-nonsense person. I like the fact that most people have no idea what it is because I don't like to draw attention to myself, since my height generally does that enough for my taste. I also like the different straps because as a slightly 'metro' guy, I like to change the strap to suit my wardrobe and it also makes the watch look/feel like a different watch.

All my watches say that I'm sporty. I've got the Seiko 200m, Omega SMP Chrono, Steinhart GMT and Sub 14060.

I can't swim, but I'm a guy who likes watches that can take abuse and don't have to take it off when washing my hands.

IMO watches are nothing but an expression of taste (or lack of same depending on the watch) nothing more.

It says I am impulsive and I have difficulty making up my mind.

I am an explorer, but I have not worn my Explorer II on a major expedition yet(motorcycling in Iceland does not count as a "major" expedition). I have, however, worn my SD, Sub and Daytona on major expeditions. I normally wear my GMT-II when I travel across time zones, and my Explorer II in court when I don't want my watch to be recognized as a Rolex. I wear my SD and Subs for diving and just about anything else that requires a durable watch. I wear vintage and my Daytona when the mood strikes me, unless I feel like wearing a Speedy.

If I can't make up my mind about which watch to wear, I ask my wife or kids to pick. Sometimes I even ask the dog. But he has difficulty like me.
