Icon8 I'm embarrassed...

My mother and I came here from Russia in 1989, before the collapse of USSR (CCCP). She was a brilliant computer programmer, yet because of the lack of English she cleaned houses for several years in New York, until we moved to Cincinnati and she found a career - related job in 1993 (BTW, she still works for the same company, knock on wood). I will spare you all the stories of extreme hardship like living in heat-less apartment in NY, getting robbed for EVERYTHING we had by our neighbor, basically hitch-hiking our way to Ohio, etc. We knew it was going to be worth it, as this country is wonderful and eventually, everyone who has a will and desire makes it. Of course, we weren't the only family who had such path to a normal life - plenty of folks of Russian background who just want the best for their family, hard working and honest.

Then, there are others.... Most recent example being this 'error' character who was responsible for shutting down TRF for the weekend, or the TKBarger scammer who screwed many people out of 100's of thousands of dollars, or other dirtbags who sell fakes... All of Russian background. Why? Makes me embarrassed to share nationality with them. When you tell people you're Russian, it is like you have to make sure they know you're a decent guy. Almost like fighting the stereotype.

Sorry for the rant, this just pisses me off. And to the 'Error' character:

Tebya ne tak uzh trudno naiti. Zalez' pod svoi kamen' i ostavaysya tam, eto moi sovet ot dushi. Ne dumai chto vsyo tak prosto.

I agree with you Greg. However, there are plenty of scumbags in each and every race, religion, and nationality.

All we can do is, try and do the right thing

People can be jerks no matter where they come from. It's in their mind set that differentiates them from other good honest people!!!

Well said Leo

we have a hell of a community here on TRF, been like that for years and will be for many to come

Greg, Don't let a minority of scumbags tarnish your heritage, Every country on this plant has a rich history and great people who have made many changes to what we see every day in our lives, many great thinkers, inventors, musicians, scientists the list goes on, we have all contributed to a great place here on earth as our ancestors paved the way for us, and there were the minority of undesirables back in history too.

Thats one thing I love about TRF is the sense of a global community, and we all get along just fine

We have many nationalities here in Sydney, my fave part of that are all the international dishes here :-) a fantastic international feed on every corner of every street

Chin up and and be a proud Russian my friend, I loved it in Russia when I was there in the early 90's

There is no need to feel embarassed being a Russian. No one should be judged just because they are of a particular nationality, race or religion.

Greg, I grew up in a very ethnic area, all of our grandparents were from some old country and spoke little to no English, also some of our parents. I had many buddies who's parents were from Russia and spoke no English. They were all very nice hard working people. There were many old Russian ladies running about in black, always coming and going from large churches. You have nothing to be embarrassed about. Yours is a very rich culture.

What exactly are you embarrased about?
I am also Russian, but I am in no way connected to the "error" .
We are in no way responsible for him, thus should not be embarrased.

I am first generation american of German decent in our family. My dad emmigrated in 1933 when he was 6. I was born in 55 and my parents sent me to school in lederhosen with sandles and socks, you think I didn't get the crap kicked out of me,until I got bigger much bigger than my peers then the harassment stopped. I remember spending the summer of 69 in Europe hitchhiking and riding bikes all over Germany when I was 14, when I came home my friends said why didn't you go see America instead of Europe like I was being unpatriotic or something, strange days. Don't be embarrassed of your history I come from a long line of inventors and statesman dating back 1000 years be proud of who YOU are. Rikki

Greg,

Regardless of one's background, there will always be representatives acting foolishly, illegally or stupidly, and causing embarrassment for the sane and reasonable members of that class. This is the nature of prejudice; to experience a few individuals and/or behaviors, and then generalize those traits or characteristics to the broader population. May I let you in on something I believe? You have been posting here for sometime and have been a very decent member. You would be hard-pressed to find anyone here who would associate you with those criminals you mentioned just because you happen to hail from the same country. If anyone was stupid enough to draw that conclusion, then that type of individual would also turn a deaf ear to comments made in your initial post. Believe me, we know who you are (a mensch). Faith

You know, I very often feel like that about the people who live in the state of Louisiana. We have some real tools here. I get really embarrassed by some of the ignorant people that I live in my community with. Some of the people I work around have no problem making racist comments, despite the fact that we have an office that is multi-ethnic. It makes me want to crawl under my desk!

But you are not responsible for the people from the same country or state as you are. Just because I live in a state with one of the worst poverty levels and worst education levels, doesn't mean that I am content with that. And it doesn't make me a bigot.

Soooooo, please know that many of us are embarrassed by people from our communities and ethnicities. You can't control those people!

We love you and that is all that matters

Don't let these scumbags define who you are.. being embarrassed of your ethnicity because of them is ridiculous.. I doubt (and hope) no one thinks less of you because of them..

Greg, as you know we are in the same boat.... my family came from Russia with nothing in the early 70's struggling for many years during my childhood.

These scammers from Russia know that the Russian authorities have bigger problems and will not go after them. Other countries have similar problems...... Russia is not alone.

Just be proud of who you are.

I'm 87.5% Scots-Irish. 62.5% Scots, 25% Irish, balance German, and I'm proud of every step of the way. I can head down into the hills of my forefathers and see the coal mines and steel mills that ground my ancestors into dust, just so they could feed their families. I've sat in the same Lodge where five generations of my forebears have sat. It's in my blood.

As my patron saint, St. Francis de Sales, said: Be who you are, and be that well.

May I ask what this means? Russian is on the short list of things I wish to learn, but seeing it in Roman characters throws off my ability to look it up.
