AP 16202ST vs Patek 5167R

Which would you choose, if you could only choose one? Or rather, what are reasons/scenarios you’d choose one over the other? On the one hand the AP is an absolute classic with 50 year history, by far superior case, bracelet and dial finishing and glistens from across the room. On the other, the Patek rose gold is elevated in a beautiful hue, and the watch as a whole feels very casual, quiet elegance.

I own the 16202 and find it in pretty much every way superior to an Aquanaut. I still don’t get how this model can get so overhyped.

2 of the best. Of course answer is both and that is my plan over time. Coin flip otherwise and would depend on what else is in collection

Got my 16202ST last week (will do an incoming post soon) and it’s a thorough delight to slap it on my wrist every day.

It’s immediately in my top 3 watches in a collection of around 50/60 pieces.

Can you share out of interest, and sorry for the OT, which two other models compete for the top spot?

Sorry for the delay in replying.

The other two pieces that compete for the top spot that the Jumbo (1) now occupies are;

2. AP 15500ST Blue dial 41mm

3. Rolex Day Date 40 Everose Olive dial

(Closely followed by my Blue dial Skydweller and AP 15510OR to round out the top 5)

Thanks, and indeed a nice selection!

Congrats Gareth, looking forward to seeing your incoming thread!

To the OP, I’ve never really understood the attraction to the Aquanaut so I’d be a very easy choice for me to make.

I have both, prefer the 16202. The 5167r has been in the safety deposit box for a sold 2 years.

Thanks all, aligns with my thinking as well. I’ve always felt a Patek is meant to be on gator.

Easy and biggest difference for me.

WHAT THE HELL IS THE PATEK OFFERED WITH ONLY A STRAP! For that much they should be like the vacherons bracelet and strap option included for that money

I went with a 5167 after debating against the 15202 because of the wearability as I have small wrists and pulling off a 39mm RO could be an issue. WR is also supposedly better on the Aquanaut but the new WR measure from Patek is confusing and a strange move to say the least.

That being said, the case and bracelet finishing on the RO jumbo is definitely superior to the Aquanaut although arguably easier to scratch. I think the 15202 had similar movement finishing as the Aquanaut but the new 16202 movements lean towards being more machine finished vs hand finished.

The RO will also get noticed more, something I don't really care about as I prefer a more low key watch but when spending this kind of money I'm sure some people would like for their watch to get noticed.

16202 this is way more special and interesting. That’s the move. I love the aquanaut and there’s so much beauty in the simplicity. Feel like it would make a great daily, but in a different league than a jumbo in my opinion.

Been to both AP and PP boutiques over the past 2 weekends. Even basic AP RO 41 is far superior to any aquanaut you can find, even in a PM.

AP 16202ST vs Patek 5167R

I have 16202st and 5164r (used to have 5167r)… will take pics together when I’m home tomorrow night.

I’d take the 16202 over the 5167 no question about it. Why- I just like it on the wrist better.
The 5164 is a lot tougher. But I paid 3x the $ for the 5164. (Ap at retail Patek at grey)
Gun to my head I’d take the 5164 but the 16202 is still my newest watch

16202 for me.

I have the 5167 albeit in A not R, and the dial is just not as deep as the AP. I find myself reaching over for the 43mm ROO or Royal Oak instead 5167 these days.

I'm not qualified to comment on this, but have no idea how the Patek strap could put it in the same league as the AP.

Must try if you have not had the opportunity
The amazing fit of the AP jumbo is nothing short of spectacular.

Must consider
The pain of dinging or scratching the beautiful casework/bezel/sharp edges is by far and away the biggest bummer of owning this masterpiece.

Blue dial over brown
White metal over yellow.

Love the aquanaut for many reasons but I must add the clasp of the aquanaut was my least favorite thing. It was bulky and I found it uncomfortable. I preferred the watch on a leather strap for comfort.

You know, I’ve found the same thing regarding the aquanaut clasp. Can spot it a mile away, it is a bit chunky relative to the rest of the watch. Still, it’s probably still one of the lowest profile pieces on rubber. The ROO definitely calls to me as well, for different reasons….

Both watches are great time pieces ! The look of the AP including the bracelet /dial and finish compared to the Patek has the edge ! As an everyday watch the AP also has the edge under the radar and a great balance when wearing casual or dressy!
