Decisions

I’m in a very fortunate position to be able to select between a Platinum Day Date (second hand because I want the smooth bezel quadrant dial with blue romans) or a 16202 AP Jumbo.

My company is about to sell giving me financial freedom and the chance to make this purchase, and whilst I have owned both a AP and a Platinum Daydate before I’ve traded them away in the past for various reasons. Whilst I don’t regret the decisions, having one or the other of these back in the collection permanently now I can afford to justify having that amount of money in a single watch, I’m struggling to make the choice.

The platinum version I had was with the silver numerals post 2021 and a simple ice blue dial, (still smooth bezel) and the AP was a white dial 15400. Neither was quite right, 41 mm AP due to the integrated bracelet was too big for me (7.5inch 19cm wrist) and platinum without the dark blue numerals felt a little washed out…

Of course I realise this is a luxury decision and the two watches couldn’t be more different but actually the steel option is far more expensive in the current secondhand market trading above £60,000, whereas a platinum day I could probably get for around £50,000.

I have never owned a Jumbo mostly because I want a screwdown crown to make it more practical for use every day. And the 152O2 obviously doesn’t have this nor does it have the quickset date. The 16202 seems to be the perfect AP for me… but I can’t quite scratch the feeling that a platinum watch is just so much more Watch for your money and is a real every day wear considering it flies under the radar.

I have four other watches all Rolex a GMT 12619BLRO, a 126655 Oysterflex Yachtmaster, a Milgauss GV and a Mk2 Starbucks sub. Curious if anyone has experience of either watch and what you think…

Big events and years of work warrant big rewards. I still can’t quite believe I’ll be able to make this purchase, but I’m so grateful that I am.

Photos of the previous watches for interest.

Wow...both look fantastic on you.

As to your choice, I'm just gonna say this. (And all that know me on TRF are going to be shocked lol). Financial freedom = both.

I missed it when I had the DD, but I don’t think it’s essential.

Both great watches the platinum DD is a lot more bang for the buck being that it's PM but the AP is very nice and can't go wrong with it definitely a tough decision

such a tough decision. Both are fantastic watches. You can't go wrong with either

I would take the DD Platinum if it has a fluted bezel, just my preference!

Other than that, I would take the 16202ST any day!

Congratulations on what seems like a very successful career.

Personally, I would go for DayDate. But with your current collection, I'd be looking at a PP Nautilus. Something like a 5800. It's special, and this is the occasion for special.

My grail historically was a 5726 white dial but they’re another 20-30k which I don’t think I could justify even now without selling another watch and I don’t think that’s where I want to go. Maybe that’s my “exit watch” in the future. I’m still in my mid 40s so that’s still on my one day list…

This one is a no brainer. Go 16202 AP, and if you can get your hands on the 50th anniversary version with 50 showing on the back movement just take it.

It’s the watch that “started it all” when it comes to Royal Oaks and Nautilus. Remember the Nautilus was a response to this same Royal Oak.

Really tough choice. I love both watches and feel the same you do about the platinum DDs being better sans fluted bezel. We have similar taste and thinking.

It’s tough, but I’d go 16202, but that’s mostly because I feel that one looks slightly better on my wrist.

Try and pick which one makes the birds sing the loudest when you try it on.

Congrats on your sale.

Should correct this, the 16202 does not have a screw down crown. Just the quick set date.

Although here is a controversial idea… 15300 late model (circa £26k) plus the DayDate!

keep in mind 15300s are a mine field and you really need to know what to look for to find a good one

with that said, not sure i could choose between a jumbo and day date. i'd flip this the other way and probably just get a jumbo and gold day date to make both work financially

This is interesting, what are the risks?

it's a fairly old watch now so a lot of them will be polished but it's not necessarily easy to tell through photos. also just not that many to choose from so it's a bit of work and patience to get a good one

Thanks, I think AP do laser welding when they polish if I have it serviced, but I’d want to see it in person before I bought. Thanks for the good advice.

I've never really learn't to love the AP-RO, apart from the openwork or PC versions.

In that case what could be more special to mark your occasion than a Pt DD. I love that watch especially the diamond dial.

Platinum DD by a mile. I don’t find the AP appealing aesthetically, at all.

Second thought - I would go 15202 all day long vs 16202 - the premium isn't justified.

I think both are worthy of celebrating a major milestone. Congrats!

However, having already had the DD, do you think different indices would be a significant improvement over your previous watch? I'm not so sure.

I would go for the 16202. I think you'll find the 39 to be a much better fit than the 41. Also, it would be a nice addition of diversity with a non-Rolex.

Either way, you're going to have a great new piece. Enjoy!

I would go for the AP 16202. I have one and it feels more special to me than the platinum DD (I had the same one you’re considering).

I also had the blue 15300 and it has pefect proportions but the blue dial is not as nice.

I think the platinum DD is a better do-it-all watch compared to the Jumbo due to waterproofness, more robust, etc.

(That's not a 16202 in OP's photo, right?)

I would go 16202 as I think that it is much more interesting visually.

It’s not a 16202. It’s OPs 15400 he used to own.
