Rolex Haters

So... I was excited about my first Rolex purchase that I posted a thread on one of my other forums to see who else was a Rolex owner. 2 or 3 ... and about 30-40 . Ok, I can understand that... I don’t understand people hating on Rolex. What’s this all about? I was called crazy for spending money on a watch that is about as accurate as a 25 dollar watch bought from Wal-Mart.

Never mind prestige... never mind quality... never mind craftsmanship.

Like I said… I don’t get it.

At the end of the day you just have to remember that most people are idiots.

This of course excludes all you wonderful TRF members.

Outside of my wife and one or two others, I keep my passion for the hobby to myself. Ironically enough, those who poo-poo you for spending $6K on a watch will shell out twice that to play golf or purchase season tickets for something.

Many see it as a status symbol. Few recognize the mechanical marvel housed between the caseback and crystal, nor the longevity, stability, and history of the company, much less the foundation which all the profits go into.

Don't sweat it...it's their loss.

Regarding this, my opinion is that some people just cannot comprehend that a Rolex watch is an item of supreme craftsmanship. When people use the comparison to a cheap watch which is quite an accurate timekeeper I may retort with something like, well go swimming with it every day and see how long it remains waterproof OR why buy a BMW when you could buy a much cheaper car that will still get you from A to B!

The other issue is simply jealousy which makes some people extremely tunnel visioned....

My final comment would be do I really give a toss.....

I've never met a Rolex hater yet... Just some folks that say they wouldn't buy one due to the cost.

Frankly, I don't care.

Well, its not just a Rolex, in my country people don´t see a point of even only 400 bucks mechanical watches :)

But when you say you have bought watch for 10.000 they´ll propably die of shock :D

For some time I haven´t seen the point of Rolex watches also, but now I know i desperatly need one - well after I´ve tried Millgaus, GMT Master II and Daytona :D

mate I wouldn't worry what other people say about your Rolex. Its your money and you use it to your hearts content.
Quick q - which forum is that? Is it another watch related forum?

At the end of the day - make sure you are happy and the whole family is healthy and happy.

The BMW anaology is a good one. You can buy car that will perform as well or nearly as well as a BMW for significantly less. However, having owned a BMW and other similarly performing cars, there are a lot of intangibles about a BMW that more than make up for the cost difference. Likewise with a Rolex.

Enjoy your watch, don't worry about what other people think. You own one of the finest watches in the world.
Some of it is jealousy, some of it is ignorance and some of it is plain stupidity. You can't do anything about the jealousy and if it makes you feel better remember that you can cure the ignorance but the stupidity is forever...

There are haters for everything under the sun. Most people are jealous. I bet if we redistribute everyone's wealth, we would all be happy because we would all have an Ivy Legaue education, live in a McMansion, drive a BMW, and sport a Rolex.

As long as you are happy, what does it matter.

I wouldn't call it stupidity or ignorance. I think a lot (probably most) people see a watch as a means to tell time and nothing more. We (people on watch boards) are by far the minority. Unless you explain that it's a hobby and why you like them, I'm not surprised that many would disagree with the purchase.

Hey, Matt.

It is hard to explain and some people only focus on the price. As Noonan said, for some, a $5 watch is enough (or no watch at all, using the cellphone/computer/car/radio/microwave oven for telling the time). Some people recognize the engineering and craftsmanship that is involved in a Rolex (and that's why we are here! It's definitely not "just a watch").

BTW, I didn't notice at first, but cool avatar! With Sparty. Go green!

I blame Rolex's ads and position as "the status watch" Of course if it were not rolex it would be some other maker, those at the top always get rotten apples tossed at them.

At the same time Rolex has gotten too much into the marketing thing IMHO, they have forced out smaller retail outlets and priced the sport watches past where they used to be priced relative to other things. Time was they were sold in post exchanges, and were tool watches. Now that has diminished so I am not super surprised that people feel as they do.

I started a similar thread on R1forum and got a mixed response. Although, the majority bashed Rolex after comparing it to the likes of Timex, a good amount of R1 members were much more appreciative (there was also a couple of Rolex owners as well).

If it brings you joy every time you glance at your watch, that's all that really matters.

Those fools don't pay your bills

Some bikes come standard with those.

I buy based on what I like and Rolex is one brand of watch that I like.

In Australia I don't think anyone notices the watch you are wearing.
